JG Pears (Newark) Ltd is a progressive and successful animal by-product processing company, supplying proteins and fats to major pet food brands and biofuel producers. We are looking for an experienced Trade Compliance Officer to join our import/export team.
This is an important role within the business, responsible for supporting and maintaining compliance across import and export activities for the group. The successful candidate will help ensure that our processes, documentation and systems meet all relevant UK and international customs, trade and border requirements.
This role would suit someone with strong import/export, customs, trade compliance or freight forwarding experience who is confident working with documentation, regulations, systems and internal stakeholders.
Working hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm

Responsibilities:
- Creating, maintaining and improving internal import and export compliance systems
- Supporting the development and standardisation of import/export processes across the group
- Ensuring new business activity has the correct paperwork and compliance requirements in place
- Maintaining accurate customs tariff information
- Ensuring group EORI and XI numbers remain valid and up to date
- Supporting and managing preparation for HMRC customs audits
- Providing accurate clearance instructions to freight forwarders to minimise delays
- Carrying out monthly audits of import/export records, logs and documentation
- Reviewing and verifying tariff classifications annually
- Keeping the business informed of changes in customs, border and trade regulations
- Providing customs guidance to ensure ongoing compliance with HMRC processes
- Supporting the Fulfilment Manager with departmental KPIs
- Managing origin declarations and long-term supplier declarations
- Checking customs data and providing finance with reports relating to zero-rated VAT
- Implementing and maintaining relevant customs software
- Obtaining port badges and relevant systems access where required
- Monitoring customs controls, identifying risks and supporting corrective actions
- Building and maintaining relationships with customs brokers, freight forwarders and other third parties
- Supporting the wider import/export team
Requirements:
- Previous experience in import/export, customs compliance, freight forwarding, shipping, logistics or a similar role
- Good understanding of HMRC customs processes and import/export documentation
- Knowledge of tariff classifications, EORI/XI numbers, customs declarations and clearance processes
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when working with records, systems and documentation
- The ability to interpret regulations and communicate requirements clearly to others
- Good organisation and time management skills
- Confidence working with internal departments, freight forwarders, customs brokers and external organisations
- Good IT skills and experience using customs, logistics or compliance systems
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement
- Experience within manufacturing, animal by-products, waste, food, agriculture, bulk goods or international trade would be advantageous, but is not essential
