Lead Engineer
Location: Newport - HU15 2FT
Salary: £46,000
Shift pattern: Two available:
Shift one - Sunday to Tuesday 10am -22:00pm Wednesday 14:00-22:00pm
Shift two - Wednesday 06:00-13:00pm Thursday to Saturday 06:00-18:00pm
Are you an experienced, hands-on engineer ready to take the lead on shift?
We are looking for a practical and confident Lead Engineer to coordinate engineering activity on shift and help keep our fast-paced manufacturing operation running safely and efficiently.
This is not a desk-based supervisory role. You will remain actively involved in planned maintenance, fault-finding, repairs and breakdown response while providing clear direction and technical support to the engineering team.
The role
As the engineering lead on shift, you will:
- Coordinate engineers and allocate work according to safety, urgency and production priorities.
- Act as the main engineering contact for Operations during the shift.
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance and respond quickly to breakdowns.
- Diagnose and repair faults across mechanical and electrical systems.
- Support the installation, modification and commissioning of equipment.
- Lead root cause analysis to reduce repeat faults and improve reliability.
- Identify improvements to machinery, line layouts and operational efficiency.
- Ensure safe systems of work, permits and lock-off procedures are followed.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and deliver effective shift handovers.
- Coach and support engineers, apprentices, operators and line leaders.
- Escalate significant breakdowns, safety concerns and operational risks appropriately.
- Help create a positive, accountable and collaborative engineering team.
About you
You will be:
- Apprenticeship trained or qualified to Level 3 or above in Electrical, Mechanical or Multi-Skilled Engineering.
- Experienced in an engineering role within manufacturing, FMCG or a production environment.
- Comfortable leading, coordinating or supervising engineering activity on shift.
- Confident fault-finding across mechanical and electrical systems.
- Experienced in planned preventative maintenance.
- Able to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics and manuals.
- A calm and practical decision-maker who can manage competing priorities.
- A clear communicator who is comfortable providing direction and challenging unsafe or poor practice.
- Committed to high standards of safety, quality and teamwork.
Experience within food manufacturing or another regulated production environment would be advantageous, as would experience of continuous improvement and coaching others.
