Senior Care Assistant
Reports to: Registered Manager / Nurse in Charge
Location: Nursing Home
Hours: Full-time / 24 to 36 Hours
Job Purpose
To provide high-quality person-centred care and support to residents, ensuring their physical, emotional, social, and psychological needs are met. The Senior Care Assistant will lead by example, supervise care staff, administer medication where trained and authorised, and support the smooth operation of the home while maintaining residents' dignity, privacy, and independence.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver compassionate, person-centred care in accordance with individual care plans.
- Assist residents with personal care, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility.
- Support residents with eating and drinking, ensuring nutritional and hydration needs are met.
- Promote residents' independence, dignity, choice, and wellbeing at all times.
- Observe, monitor, and report any changes in residents' physical or mental health.
Medication Management
- Administer and record medication safely and accurately in line with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain medication records and report any concerns or discrepancies immediately.
- Ensure medication is stored securely and handled appropriately.
Leadership and Supervision
- Provide guidance, support, and supervision to Care Assistants.
- Act as a role model and promote best practice in care delivery.
- Assist with the induction, training, and mentoring of new staff.
- Allocate duties and support staff during shifts to ensure effective care provision.
Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date care records, incident reports, and daily notes.
- Complete assessments and care documentation as required.
- Ensure confidentiality of resident information is maintained at all times.
Communication
- Develop positive relationships with residents, families, visitors, and healthcare professionals.
- Liaise with nurses, GPs, district nurses, social workers, and other agencies as required.
- Participate in handovers and team meetings, ensuring effective communication between shifts.
Health and Safety
- Follow all safeguarding, health and safety, infection prevention, and moving and handling procedures.
- Report accidents, incidents, hazards, or safeguarding concerns promptly.
- Ensure a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for residents.
Regulatory Compliance
- Work in accordance with CQC standards, the Health and Social Care Act, and company policies.
- Support the home in maintaining high standards of care and quality assurance.
- Attend mandatory training and continuous professional development sessions.
Person SpecificationEssential
- NVQ/QCF Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent).
- Previous experience working in a nursing care setting.
- Experience supervising or supporting care staff.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Understanding of safeguarding, dignity, and person-centred care.
- Competent in maintaining accurate records.
Desirable
- Medication administration training.
- Experience working with individuals living with dementia.
- Knowledge of CQC regulations and standards.
- First Aid certification.
