Contract Manufacturing Engineer - 6 Months
Why Southco?
With over 70 years of engineering excellence and more than 3000 employees in 20 countries, Southco is a global leader for the manufacturing of engineered access solutions, products that you and thousands of others interact with every day. Our products form what we call "touch points", such as locks, latches, fasteners, hinges, handles and many other products that serve virtually hundreds of industries worldwide.
About the role
Southco is looking for a Manufacturing Engineer (NPD) to join our New Product Development team in Worcester on a 6-month contract. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Engineer to get hands-on with new product introductions, working closely with our Business Unit teams from initial quotation right through to full production run-at-rate.
You'll be the operational link between our customers, our business units and the shop floor — coordinating cross-functional resources, keeping projects on track, and making sure new products launch smoothly and to plan.
What you'll be doing
- Leading the coordination of new product projects, working with Business Unit teams to hit every milestone on time and to budget
- Pulling together quotation information and RFQs for new product projects, working with supply chain and SQE colleagues to identify and approve suppliers
- Managing the handover from project into production, supporting the team through pre-production and into Start of Production (and beyond)
- Overseeing the tooling supply process end to end — from concept design and supplier selection through to T1/T2 trials and full production
- Maintaining a clear, up-to-date project plan and keeping everyone — from the shop floor to the NPD Manager — informed of progress and risks
- Getting stuck in with a hands-on, practical approach, bringing in extra support wherever it's needed to keep things moving
- Supporting continuous improvement activity alongside the manufacturing team
What we're looking for
- HND/HNC in Engineering (Electrical/Electronics bias), or equivalent experience
- Around 3+ years' experience in a similar manufacturing or engineering environment; familiarity with TS16949, APQP and FMEA processes is a real plus
- Solid project management experience — comfortable running multiple, complex, cross-functional projects at once (MS Project experience welcome)
- Confident communicator who's used to coordinating across different teams and functions, and comfortable presenting progress and ideas
- A practical, can-do approach and genuine enthusiasm for hitting deadlines
- Experience leading or supervising a technical team is an advantage, though not essential
