We’re looking for a knowledgeable and detail-focused Customs Duty Compliance Specialist to join our Finance team in Manchester. This is a specialist, finance-based role focused on ensuring our customs liabilities are accurate, fully supported, compliant and audit-ready.
You’ll review and challenge import and export declarations prepared by external customs agents, checking duty treatment, calculations, classifications, customs procedure codes, tax codes and supporting evidence. You’ll also support HMRC submissions, duty claims, approvals, audits and customs-related reporting.
Working closely with colleagues across Finance, Operations and Commercial, as well as customs agents and HMRC, you’ll help identify and manage customs duty risks, strengthen internal controls and provide clear, practical guidance to the wider business.
You’ll bring previous experience in customs compliance, import duty compliance or a similar specialist role, together with the ability to interpret complex customs requirements, investigate detail, constructively challenge information and translate technical regulations into practical business guidance.

Ensure UK, including Northern Ireland, import/export activities are compliant from a customs duty perspective, including correct customs duties treatment, tariff classifications, customs procedure codes, tax codes and preferential origin
- Conduct pre-clearance checks and post-clearance reviews of import/export declarations prepared by external customs agents, verifying the accuracy of duty treatment, duty calculations, supporting evidence and completeness of duty payments
- Support EU import activity by reviewing duty calculations and customs information provided by Operations and EU customs agents
- Review trade preferences, duty suspensions, Free Trade Agreements and other duty reliefs/treatments to ensure they are correctly applied and supported by appropriate evidence
- Obtain, review and retain customs documentation, including bills of lading, certificates of origin, preference evidence, customs declarations and supporting records for HMRC audits, internal reviews and duty claims
- Submit to HMRC where required customs reports and supporting documents, including bills of discharge and post-clearance amendments
- Maintain HMRC customs approvals, authorisations and relevant UK import licences where required by the business
- Monitor and reconcile the import duty deferment account and manage duty refunds and duty claims within required deadlines
- Perform regular internal reviews to identify customs duty risks, control gaps and improvement opportunities, and support maintenance of customs duty controls and procedures
- Prepare and provide customs-related summaries, analysis and supporting information to internal stakeholders, including Finance, Operations, Commercial and management, to support compliance monitoring, audits, business reporting and decision-making
- Liaise with customs agents, HMRC, Operations, Finance, Commercial and other stakeholders, provide to internal teams guidance/training and monitoring regulatory changes affecting customs duty compliance.

Previous experience in customs compliance, import duty compliance or a similar role. Experience within the oil, fuel or commodity sector would be beneficial
- Strong knowledge of UK customs regulations, import/export duty requirements, UK Trade Tariff, customs procedure codes, tax codes, International Trade Agreements and preferential origin requirements
- Experience reviewing customs declarations, duty calculations and supporting documents from a duty compliance perspective
- Understanding of duty deferment accounts, post-clearance amendments, duty reclaim processes and HMRC audit requirements
- Knowledge of EU customs regulations would be beneficial
- Degree in business, finance or a related field or equivalent relevant experience
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and attention-to-detail skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with confidence engaging stakeholders at all levels
- Ability to interpret complex customs requirements and translate them into practical business guidance and controls
- Organised and deadline-focused, with a proactive approach to risk identification, evidence retention and continuous improvement
- Proficient in MS Excel and comfortable working with customs data.
