Dental Nurse -Job Purpose
The post-holder is responsible for providing a friendly and reassuring environment to patients, families, carers, escorts and colleagues. As a member of the nursing team, the dental nurse receives the patients, prepares the surgery for treatment, assists the dentist throughout treatment and maintains the surgery in accordance with cross infection policies and procedures.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
· Demonstrate high clinical and professional standards at all times
· Keep the clinical areas and all equipment and instruments clean, tidy and sterile as appropriate according to the Practice’s health and safety and infection control procedures and manufacturers' instructions
· Cleaning must be undertaken by the Dental Nurse after each patient and after each session (morning and afternoon). At the end of the day special attention must be given to the wiping down of all cupboard doors and surgery main door and handle and mopping the floor of the surgery. This is the responsibility of the Dental Nurse on duty in the surgery each day.
· Use all equipment and machinery in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and ensure that they are maintained regularly and in good working order
· Provide chairside assistance to the Dentist/Hygienist ensuring that the correct equipment is available
· Provide physical, and emotional care and support for patients and carers as required
· Demonstrate discretion and empathy when dealing with sensitive and confidential information regarding patients
· Anticipate the needs of the clinician and safeguard the welfare of the patient
· Monitor the clinical signs of the patient to anticipate any unplanned situations, e.g. a medical emergency
· Assist the dentist/hygienist in the provision of emergency dental care should the occasion arise
· Accurately complete patient clinical records as directed
· Handle all substances in accordance with Health and Safety policies
· Be responsible for ensuring the decontamination of materials and equipment that have been exposed to blood and body fluids prior to their dispatch and on receipt from outside agencies including impressions and dental equipment for repair
· Be familiar and comply with all health and safety rules and guidance, including PPE, COSHH, mercury handling, radiation, infection control, safe disposal of sharps, waste disposal etc
· Assist the dentist in taking dental radiographs, process and store radiographs using appropriate equipment and record maintenance in accordance with the Radiation QA and Audit requirements.
· Complete laboratory request forms, keep records of work sent, received and fitted
· Ensure infection control tick sheets are completed on a daily basis
· Ensure adequate stocks of materials and other items within the surgery
· Ensure order requests are passed to Practice Manager as necessary
· Ensure computer/written records are accurately maintained and securely stored
· Liaise with reception to ensure smooth patient communications and transfer of records
· Know how to record incidents and understand importance of keeping the Practice Manager informed
· Prepare, use, maintain and close down dental surgeries and equipment adhering to current guidance, policies and legislation e.g. Infection Control policies and HTM01-05
· Launder scrubs daily and be aware of when and how they are worn
· Undergo training as may be required to develop skills and abilities
· Attend refresher and update training for medical emergencies and CPR
· Maintain a personal CPD file as required
· Attend and participate in Practice meetings
· Act in accordance with the Practice rules and code of conduct
· Perform other duties as necessary for the efficient operation of the Practice
Receptionist - Job purpose
Ensure that the Reception is organised in an efficient manner and patients are looked after during their visit to the Practice.
Key areas of Responsibility:
· Answer the telephone in the prescribed manner
· Welcome all patients arriving at the Practice
· Ensure that the appointment system is efficient and accurate
· Collect and record patient payments
· Ensure that patient records are completed correctly before filing and storing them in an efficient, tidy and secure manner
· Encourage prompt payments and chase outstanding debts according to the Practice policy
· Liaise with dental laboratories, supply companies and other organisations as required
· Send out patient recalls
· Compile day sheets
· Keep the office, reception area and waiting room clean and tidy
· Other duties as necessary for the efficient operation of the Practice
· Undergo training as may be required to develop your skills and abilities
· Attend refresher and update training for medical emergencies and CPR
