Assistant Management Accountant
Location: Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire
Salary: £35,000 + bonus
Hours: Full-time, permanent
About the Role
We are a growing group of companies looking for a capable and experienced Assistant Management Accountant to join our team. Reporting directly to the Group Financial Controller, you will take ownership of the day-to-day finance function across two companies whilst supporting the production of monthly management accounts and financial reporting.
This is a broad, hands-on role that goes well beyond traditional accounts assistant duties. We are looking for someone who has built their expertise through hands-on experience in a similar all-round finance role. Someone who knows their way around a set of accounts, can run payroll confidently, and is ready to grow into management accounts with the support of an experienced Group Financial Controller.
Key Responsibilities
Finance & Accounts
- Processing purchase and sales ledger invoices across two companies using Sage 50
- Inputting all bank payments and receipts and reconciling bank accounts weekly across multiple currencies
- Managing weekly debtors and creditors reports
- Credit control - proactively chasing overdue payments
- Paying suppliers within agreed remit
- Preparing monthly and quarterly VAT returns
Management Accounts & Reporting
- Assisting the Group Financial Controller in the preparation of monthly management accounts
- Posting month-end journals including accruals and prepayments
- Performing balance sheet reconciliations
- Providing weekly P&L, debtor, creditor and cashflow reporting to Senior Management
- Supporting month-end close across both entities
Payroll
- Running end-to-end monthly payroll in-house for the group
- Managing RTI submissions to HMRC
- Processing statutory payments including SSP and SMP
- Producing P60s and P11Ds
- Answering payroll queries from staff at all levels
- Ensuring PAYE is paid on time and compliantly
- Onboarding new starters and maintaining staff files
- Recording holidays, unauthorised leave and sickness
- Completing return-to-work documentation
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience in a broad, all-round finance role
- Advanced excel skills
- Solid exposure to or strong desire to develop into management accounts preparation
- Experience running payroll end-to-end, ideally in-house
- Confident user of Sage accounting software
- Strong working knowledge of VAT and PAYE
- Ability to manage multiple priorities across more than one entity
- High attention to detail with a methodical, organised approach
- A self-starter who can work with minimal supervision and take real ownership of their work
