The primary role of the senior healthcare assistant will be to assist, support and work in collaboration with neonatal nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide high quality care to neonates and their families.
The post holder will adopt a family centred approach to provide direct care to neonates and assist parents to participate in caring for their baby whilst on the neonatal unit. Helping to develop their parental skills ready for discharge.
Promote a positive breastfeeding culture within the neonatal services. Being able to describe the key practices that facilitate the initiation and maintenance of breast feeding in line with BFI standards.
Promote the importance of skin-to-skin contact and its benefits to both mother and baby.
Be able to support parents who formula feed to do so responsively and as safely as possible.
Play an integral role in efficient admission and discharge processes.
Act as a clinical role model for junior staff, supporting them to develop.
Plan and organise allocated work within identified time scales.
Implement clinical care and undertake routine clinical observations on neonates and record outcome. Escalate any deviations form the normal range appropriately.
Undertake enteral feeding and tube checks in accordance to NVQ module.
Obtain capillary blood samples in accordance to NVQ modules.
To assist or perform neonatal blood spot and serum bilirubin ratio (SBR) test
Supervise junior members of the team.
Participate in tracking, obtaining and filing clinical records as required in line with local policy.
Be vigilant of child protection issues and refer issues of concern in a timely manner.
Assist in stocking up and cleaning of equipment needed to support the delivery of care to the neonate
Assist the neonatal nurse with neonatal resuscitation where required, this may include collecting and/or passing of equipment.
