Mount Cook Adventure Centre is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing access to the outdoors to all, especially young people and those would not otherwise have the opportunity. We are looking for someone who shares our passion for the outdoors, and who would relish in the chance to work in an activity orientated establishment.
About the role
The role of an Outdoor Activity Apprentice is to begin an exciting career in the outdoors, learning the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to become a qualified Outdoor Activity Instructor. Apprentices will undertake the Level 3 Outdoor Activity Instructor Apprenticeship, a practical yearlong training programme, working alongside experienced instructors to gradually build confidence and competence in delivering safe, engaging, high-quality activities and learning experiences to a wide range of client groups, while representing the Mount Cook values of customer service, professionalism, and inclusion.
Successful candidates will start in January 2027 and undertake training for around a year, with the potential for ongoing work following the successful completion of the apprenticeship. Accommodation near the workplace is provided, along with structured training and plenty of opportunities to build skills and confidence.
The day typically starts at 08.15 and finishes at 17.15. Evening shifts finish at 20.15. There is an expectation to work some weekends and public holidays.
This role is subject to a DBS check and in line with the requirement of the current immigration and asylum legislation, all applicants must be eligible to live and work in the U.K.

Responsibilities
Training and Development
- Undertake the Level 3 Outdoor Activity Instructor Apprenticeship, a structured programme of training towards becoming a qualified Outdoor Activity Instructor.
- Shadow and assist experienced instructors during activity sessions, learning delivery techniques, group management, and safety procedures.
- Progressively take on more responsibility for planning and delivering activity sessions as skills and confidence develop.
- Work towards relevant National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications as directed by the Centre.
- Attend all required training days, workshops, and assessments.
Activity Support
- Support the setup, safety checks, and pack down of activities as required.
- Assist in monitoring participant wellbeing and safety during activities, under the guidance of a qualified instructor.
- Help maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment for all clients.
- Assist with managing group behaviour and encouraging participation under supervision.
- Support with the maintenance, cleaning, and storage of activity equipment.
- Report any damage, faults, or safety concerns to the relevant manager.
General Responsibilities
- Help maintain cleanliness and organisation of activity areas and communal spaces.
- Work effectively with instructors and other Centre staff as part of the team.
- Attend staff meetings and contribute ideas to the development of activities and resources.
- Provide feedback to line managers and mentors on progress and learning.
- Uphold the Centre's policies including safeguarding, equality, and health & safety.
- Support additional Centre duties in other departments as required and directed.
- Act as a positive role model for all Centre visitors and guests.
- Show commitment to continuous learning and professional development throughout the apprenticeship.
