Learning Support Assistant – SEND School in Durham
Leader Education is currently seeking a motivated and compassionate Learning Support Assistant to join a welcoming SEND school in the Durham area. This opportunity is well-suited to graduates, those starting out in their careers, or individuals with a strong interest in supporting children with additional needs such as SEND and PMLD.

This specialist provision supports pupils aged 2–16, offering a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment. The team is dedicated to building positive relationships with students and encouraging both their personal growth and academic progress. The school has been recognised with a “Good” Ofsted rating, reflecting its strong focus on wellbeing and supportive ethos.
The Role
- Long-term opportunity following a successful trial period
- Working hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm
- Provide tailored support to children with autism, disabilities, and other special educational needs within the classroom setting
- Assist teachers in implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavior management strategies
- Support children’s social, emotional, and communication development through engaging activities and interactions
- Help supervise toddlers and young children during lessons, breaks, and outdoor activities to ensure their safety and engagement
- Foster a nurturing environment that encourages independence, confidence, and positive behavior
- Collaborate with teaching staff, parents, and specialists to monitor progress and adapt support strategies accordingly
- Maintain accurate records of children’s development, behavior incidents, and support interventions
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will play a key role in helping students access learning, build confidence, and develop independence within the classroom. You’ll work closely with teaching staff to ensure each pupil receives the support they need to thrive.
What We’re Looking For
- Graduates or individuals keen to pursue a career in education, care, or psychology
- Calm, adaptable, and empathetic individuals
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships
- A good understanding of safeguarding and child protection
- Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to obtain one)
- Previous experience is helpful but not essential
