Job Overview
Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Mind is looking for a compassionate, experienced and values-led Senior CYP Support Worker to help lead our growing children and young people’s services.
This is a hands-on senior role, combining direct 1-to-1 outreach and mentoring for young people with more complex needs with day-to-day line management and support for two CYP Support Workers. You’ll help ensure our work is safe, consistent, inclusive and genuinely shaped by young people’s voices.
You’ll work flexibly across Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale, supporting young people in schools, homes and community settings. The role involves managing a planned caseload; completing assessments, support plans and safety plans; working closely with families and partner agencies; and contributing to groups, hubs and activities.
We’re looking for someone with substantial experience supporting vulnerable children and young people, a strong understanding of safeguarding, risk and trauma-informed practice, and the confidence to provide calm, supportive leadership to colleagues. You’ll be compassionate, organised, non-judgemental and committed to neurodiversity-affirming, identity-affirming and strengths-based support.
This is a full-time role of 37.5 hours per week. A driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential, as is flexibility to work some evenings and occasional weekends. Enhanced DBS and safer recruitment checks will be required.
Duties
- Hold a planned caseload of children and young people, including those with complex needs, multiple disadvantages or elevated risk, within the boundaries of a non-clinical service.
- Build safe, trusting and consistent relationships through flexible 1-to-1 support in schools, homes, community venues and other appropriate settings.
- Complete needs assessments, support plans, risk assessments, safety plans and regular reviews with young people.
- Support young people with emotional regulation, anxiety, routines, social connection, education engagement, advocacy and identifying their own strengths and goals.
- Work collaboratively with families, schools, counsellors, health and social care professionals, and community partners, ensuring young people’s wishes and consent are respected wherever appropriate.
- Recognise when a young person’s needs are outside the service’s scope and coordinate appropriate referrals, escalation or joint working with specialist services.
- Contribute to the planning and delivery of hubs, group activities, outreach and psychoeducation sessions.
- Provide regular line-management supervision, guidance, case consultation and reflective support to two CYP Support Workers.
- Help allocate and review caseloads, balancing risk, complexity, continuity, worker wellbeing and service capacity.
- Support colleagues to maintain high-quality records, assessments, plans, safeguarding documentation, case notes and outcome data.
- Act as a first point of consultation for day-to-day safeguarding and risk concerns, following SWR Mind safeguarding procedures and escalating significant concerns appropriately.
- Monitor the quality and timeliness of recording and contribute to case-file checks, practice learning and service improvements.
- Develop positive working relationships with schools, colleges, community organisations and statutory and specialist services.
- Ensure CYP services are inclusive, trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming and shaped by young people’s feedback and lived experience.
- Contribute to monitoring, evaluation, reporting, partnership meetings and the ongoing development of SWR Mind’s CYP services.
Requirements

- A relevant qualification, or substantial equivalent experience, in youth work, mental health, social care, counselling, education or a related field.
Desirable
- Formal experience of line management, supervision, coaching or staff development.
- Training in management, supervision, trauma-informed practice, de-escalation, motivational interviewing or restorative approaches.
- Knowledge of local CYP pathways, including CAMHS, education, early help, social care and voluntary-sector support.
- Experience of group facilitation, youth co-production, service development, advocacy, partnership work or case-file auditing.
- Knowledge of the Scarborough, Whitby, Ryedale and Filey communities.
- Significant experience of providing direct 1-to-1 support to vulnerable children and young people, including managing complex situations, risk and competing needs.
- Strong understanding of children and young people’s mental health, trauma and adversity, safeguarding, risk assessment, safety planning, confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Experience of completing assessments, support planning and reviews; maintaining accurate case records; monitoring outcomes; and working independently in community settings.
- Ability to provide calm, clear and supportive leadership, including reflective supervision, constructive feedback and appropriate escalation of concerns.
- A trauma-informed, person-centred, strengths-based and non-judgemental approach.
- Commitment to inclusive, neurodiversity-affirming and identity-affirming practice, and to challenging discrimination and stigma.
- Excellent communication, organisation and IT skills, including confidence using databases and case-recording systems.
- Ability to build positive relationships with young people, families, colleagues and partner agencies.
