Job Overview
The People & Compliance Lead provides practical, legally compliant HR support across the business and coordinates corporate compliance. The postholder supports the full employment lifecycle and keeps the records, systems and renewals needed to meet statutory, client, accreditation and company requirements.
Key ResponsibilitiesPeople Operations and Employee Relations
- Advise directors and line managers on employment practice and apply company policies consistently.
- Working in line with Mentor, our Digital HR support, maintain contracts, the employee handbook, HR policies, procedures and template correspondence.
- Coordinate conduct, capability, grievance, attendance, flexible-working and appeal processes, obtaining specialist advice when needed.
- Oversee probation, performance, development, succession and employee engagement.
- Administer leave, sickness absence, occupational-health referrals, workplace adjustments and return-to-work arrangements.
- Support consultation, organisational change, redundancy and employment transfers.
- Promote equality, dignity, inclusion and respectful working across offices and sites.
Recruitment, Onboarding and Workforce Planning
- Coordinate workforce planning and recruitment for office, trade, apprentice and site-based roles.
- Manage fair, documented selection, offers and pre-employment checks, including right to work, references, qualifications and licences.
- Deliver onboarding and induction, ensuring policies, site requirements, equipment, access and training are completed.
- Coordinate leavers, final payroll information, exit feedback, return of property and removal of access.
- Support apprenticeships, work experience and early-careers activity.
Pay, Benefits, Records and Reporting
- Prepare accurate monthly payroll changes covering starters, leavers, pay, deductions, overtime, leave and benefits.
- Coordinate pension, benefits and salary-review administration.
- Maintain secure personnel files, HR systems, organisation charts and retention records in line with data-protection requirements.
- Report on headcount, recruitment, turnover, absence, training, casework, workforce risks and agreed indicators.
- Monitor HR costs and support budgets and supplier reviews.
Learning, Competence and Construction Workforce Controls
- Maintain training and competence records for mandatory, technical and role-specific requirements.
- Track and renew relevant cards, licences and certificates, including CSCS, CPCS/NPORS, plant, first aid and asbestos awareness.
- Coordinate training needs, bookings, refreshers and evaluations.
- Work with the health and safety lead on inductions, briefings, wellbeing and safety culture.
- Keep workforce competence evidence ready for tenders, audits and site mobilisation.
Corporate Compliance, Insurance and Utilities
- Maintain the compliance register and renewal calendar, with owners, evidence, lead times, status and escalation points.
- Coordinate renewal of employers’ liability, public liability, professional indemnity, contractors’ all risks, fleet, property, cyber and other business insurance.
- Compile declarations and claims, payroll, turnover, project and asset information; maintain certificates and notify insurers of material changes, incidents and claims.
- Coordinate utility and service-contract renewals for premises, covering energy, water, telecoms, waste, tariffs and notice periods.
- Maintain required registrations, licences, permits, memberships and returns.
- Check subcontractor and key-supplier insurance, competence and accreditation evidence.
ISO, Constructionline, SSIP and Management Systems
- Coordinate applicable ISO 9001and ISO 14001 certification, surveillance and recertification.
- Maintain audit-ready records and coordinate internal audits, management reviews, risks, nonconformities, corrective actions and improvement activity.
- Control management-system policies, procedures, registers, forms and approved versions.
- Maintain and renew Constructionline, SSIP and other client, framework, trade-body or pre-qualification accreditations, keeping supporting evidence current.
- Respond to assessor queries, support tender submissions and report overdue or high-risk compliance actions to the board.
Legal, Regulatory and Ethical Compliance
- Monitor changes in employment, data protection, equality, immigration, modern slavery, bribery, whistleblowing and relevant construction requirements.
- Translate legal, client, framework and company obligations into practical policies, controls, communications and training.
- Maintain policy acknowledgements, declarations, confidential reporting routes and completion evidence.
- Liaise with advisers, auditors, certification bodies, brokers, insurers, utilities, accreditation schemes and training providers.
- Report compliance status and escalate significant breaches, gaps, emerging risks and overdue actions.
Candidate ProfileEssential
- Strong generalist HR experience across the employment lifecycle and employee relations.
- Sound knowledge of UK employment practice and data protection, with judgement on when to seek specialist advice.
- Experience coordinating audits, accreditations, controlled documents or renewal schedules.
- Excellent organisation, attention to detail and ability to manage competing deadlines.
- Clear communication and confidence working with senior leaders and site-based teams.
- Integrity and discretion when handling confidential information.
- Competence with Microsoft 365 and HR, document-control or compliance systems.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to visit company sites where required.
Desirable
- CIPD Level 5 or above, or equivalent experience.
- Construction or other project-based, safety-critical sector experience.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001and ISO 14001
- Experience with Constructionline, SSIP, pre-qualification questionnaires, insurance or utilities renewals.
- Internal auditor or relevant quality, environmental, health and safety or compliance training.
