The Methodist Church in Britain is seeking an inspiring, collaborative and visionary leader to serve as Chair of the Global Relationships Committee, from 1 September 2027.
This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of our global work, strengthening meaningful connections across the worldwide Methodist family and beyond. As Chair, you will help bring vision to life — guiding strategy, fostering collaboration, and enabling the Church’s global relationships to flourish with greater impact, mutuality and purpose.
We are looking for someone who can create space for diverse voices, encourage participation, and lead with wisdom, openness and imagination.
About the role
As Chair, you will work closely with the Director of Global Relationships and senior Church leadership to:
-
Guide the Committee to provide strategic direction and vision for global relationships and mission
-
Facilitate inclusive, engaging and effective committee meetings, ensuring all voices are heard
-
Encourage collaboration, participation and shared ownership across the Committee
-
Guide reflection, discernment and decision-making in line with Methodist values
-
Support the development and oversight of global mission strategy
-
Ensure strong governance and clear reporting to the Mission Committee
The Global Relationships Committee plays a vital role as a bridge between the Methodist Church in Britain, All We Can, and partners across the worldwide Methodist family. Through its work, it helps shape how the Church lives out Our Calling in a global context.
The work and strategy of the Committee is set out in broad terms in Standing Order 322 and for the World Mission Fund in Standing Order 373(2). This is a three-year appointment (renewable for a further three with approval from the Mission Committee). The time commitment involves Preparation and chairing meetings (one of them being a residential for 24 hours and two online per year) with the support of the Global Relationships team Director and Administrators and availability to respond in a timely way to urgent questions or exceptionally decision making in between meetings. This role is voluntary with expenses reimbursed.
About You
We welcome expressions of interest from people who bring leadership, insight and a passion for global mission, and who are committed to creating spaces where others can contribute and thrive.
You will bring:
-
Experience of chairing a committee of the Methodist Church and facilitating groups, with the ability to enable participation and constructive dialogue
-
A strategic mindset, with the ability to help translate vision into action
-
An understanding of, or curiosity about, global mission, development, international partnerships and Methodism worldwide.
-
The ability to listen well, build consensus and navigate complexity with sensitivity
-
A commitment to the values and life of the Methodist Church in Britain (membership in good standing required)
Commitment to Inclusion
We are committed to building a committee that reflects the richness and diversity of the Church and the global community we serve.
We actively encourage expressions of interest from people of all backgrounds, particularly those currently underrepresented in our leadership, including people from minoritised ethnic groups, Global majority heritage, younger members, and those with varied lived experiences of global mission.
If you are excited by the opportunity but unsure if you meet every requirement, we warmly encourage you to apply
We advise you to review the role description and person specification ahead of completing and submitting your online expression of interest form.
