Due to continued growth and expansion across South Wales, an opportunity has arisen for an experienced Carpenter / Multi-Skilled Fabric Engineer to join our construction and passive fire protection team.
The successful candidate will work across a variety of commercial contracts and project works, carrying out general carpentry, fire door installation and maintenance, and passive fire-stopping works. Facility Services Group Ltd is BM TRADA third-party accredited for fire door installation, fire door maintenance and fire-stopping works. The successful candidate will be expected to work in accordance with our accredited procedures and complete the company’s in-house training, practical assessments and ongoing competency reviews.
Key Responsibilities
The role will include:
- Installation of new timber and composite fire door sets.
- Fire door inspections, maintenance and remedial works.
- Installation and replacement of fire-rated doors, frames, architraves and associated components.
- Installation and adjustment of hinges, door closers, locks, latches, panic hardware, seals and other ironmongery.
- Checking fire doors for correct gaps, alignment, operation, certification and compliance with the approved specification.
- Surveying fire doors and openings before installation or remedial works commence.
- Identifying the correct fire-performance requirements for the proposed installation.
- Reviewing supporting certification, test evidence, field of application reports and manufacturers’ technical information.
- Selecting an appropriate tested or assessed detail for the specific opening, wall construction, doorset and required fire rating.
- Ensuring the proposed installation falls within the scope and limitations of the relevant test evidence or assessment.
- Installing fire doorsets strictly in accordance with the approved detail and manufacturer’s installation instructions.
- Ensuring completed installations are fully compliant, correctly recorded and ready for inspection and formal sign-off.
- Completing fire-stopping works to service penetrations, linear joints, compartment walls and floors.
- Surveying penetrations and surrounding substrates to establish the correct tested fire-stopping system.
- Reviewing tested details, manufacturers’ technical data sheets and installation requirements before commencing work.
- Installing tested fire-stopping systems, including batt and mastic, fire-rated sealants, pipe collars, pipe wraps and other approved products.
- Ensuring fire-stopping installations are completed within the limitations of the tested system and are ready for inspection and sign-off.
- Carrying out general carpentry and joinery works to a high standard.
- Undertaking commercial maintenance, refurbishment and fabric-repair works.
- Reading drawings, specifications, manufacturers’ installation instructions and fire-stopping system details.
- Recording works accurately using photographs, job sheets, inspection reports and digital reporting systems.
- Working independently and as part of a wider project team.
- Communicating professionally with clients, site managers and other contractors.
- Maintaining clean, safe and organised working areas.
- Following company procedures, risk assessments, method statements and site-specific health and safety requirements.

Essential Requirements
Applicants must have:
- NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Carpentry and Joinery, or an equivalent qualification.
- Proven experience in carpentry and joinery.
- Practical experience installing, maintaining and repairing fire doors.
- Practical experience carrying out fire-stopping works.
- A strong understanding of the requirements relating to fire door installation and maintenance.
- A Strong understanding of passive fire protection principles and compartmentation.
- The experience and technical knowledge required to survey an opening or penetration accurately.
- The ability to identify the required fire performance and locate a suitable tested or assessed installation detail.
- The ability to interpret fire test evidence, field of application reports, certification and manufacturers’ technical literature.
- A clear understanding of the limitations and permitted scope of tested fire door and fire-stopping systems.
- The ability to install fire doors and fire-stopping systems strictly in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions and approved details.
- The ability to recognise when a proposed installation falls outside the available test evidence and must not proceed without further technical approval.
- The ability to complete compliant installations that are accurately recorded and ready for inspection and sign-off.
- Experience working in occupied commercial buildings and live working environments.
- Good fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to work safely on their own initiative and as part of a team.
- Good communication and customer-service skills.
- A professional, reliable and flexible approach to work.
- Good timekeeping and organisational skills.
- A full UK driving licence.
- The ability to travel throughout South Wales and occasionally further afield when required.
- Competency using a smartphone or tablet to complete reports and upload photographs.
Interview and Assessment Process
As part of the recruitment process, shortlisted candidates will be required to attend a formal interview and complete knowledge-based and practical assessments.
These assessments will be used to confirm the candidate’s experience, technical understanding and ability to:
- Survey fire doors, openings and fire-stopping penetrations correctly.
- Identify the required fire performance.
- Locate and interpret suitable tested or assessed details.
- Understand the limitations of supporting test evidence and certification.
- Follow manufacturers’ installation instructions.
- Recognise non-compliant or unsupported installations.
- Complete works to the required standard, ready for inspection and sign-off.
Practical assessment requirements must be successfully completed before the candidate can be approved to undertake accredited fire door or fire-stopping works on behalf of Facility Services Group Ltd.
Training and Competency Requirements
As part of our BM TRADA-accredited management system, the successful candidate will be required to:
- Complete Facility Services Group Ltd’s in-house fire door and fire-stopping training.
- Undertake practical installation and maintenance assessments.
- Demonstrate their ability to survey works and select appropriate tested details.
- Demonstrate an understanding of manufacturers’ instructions, supporting test evidence and system limitations.
- Complete supervised installations until formally approved as competent.
- Follow all company quality procedures, inspection processes and record-keeping requirements.
- Participate in ongoing toolbox talks, refresher training and continued professional development.
- Maintain the standard of workmanship required under our third-party accreditation.
- Accept that authorisation to carry out or sign off accredited works will only be granted following successful training and assessment.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
The following would be advantageous.
- Previous experience working under a third-party accredited fire door or fire-stopping scheme.
- BM TRADA, FIRAS, IFC or equivalent fire door installation, maintenance or fire-stopping training.
- Knowledge of relevant fire door and passive fire protection standards.
