Full Job Description
GRAYS Electrical Engineering Limited is looking for an experienced Contracts Manager / Business Development Manager to join our growing commercial and industrial electrical contracting business.
This is a senior role for someone who understands commercial and industrial electrical work, can build trusted client relationships, and can help turn the right opportunities into profitable, well-delivered projects.
We are not looking for someone to simply chase turnover.
We are looking for someone who understands that good business is built on trust, quality, margin, repeat clients and selecting the right opportunities.
Over the last decade and a half, GRAYS has built a reputation for quality, professionalism, long-term relationships and doing things properly. We are now looking for the right person to help us shape the next stage of the business.
The Role
This is a hands-on commercial and contracts role for someone who enjoys both client relationships and project delivery.
You will be involved in developing new opportunities, managing existing client relationships, preparing quotations and tenders, supporting contract delivery and working closely with our operations team to make sure projects are delivered safely, professionally and profitably.
This role may suit someone already working as a Contracts Manager, Business Development Manager, Commercial Manager, Project Manager or similar within electrical contracting, industrial services, building services, facilities management, manufacturing or construction.
It may also suit someone who has been working in a corporate environment and wants to be part of a privately owned business where decisions are made quickly, people are known by name, and your contribution genuinely matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and develop new business opportunities within the commercial and industrial sectors.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with new and existing clients.
- Attend client meetings, site visits and networking events.
- Prepare quotations, estimates and tender submissions.
- Manage contracts from enquiry and tender stage through to completion.
- Support negotiation of contract terms, variations and commercial agreements.
- Monitor project costs, margins, labour allocation and contract performance.
- Work closely with the operations team to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time and to the required standard.
- Support sustainable business growth without compromising quality or profitability.
- Help improve commercial processes, reporting and client account management.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, quality and company standards.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who is:
- Experienced in commercial or industrial contracting.
- Commercially aware and able to understand project profitability.
- Confident building and maintaining client relationships.
- Comfortable identifying and developing new opportunities.
- Able to manage contracts from enquiry through to completion.
- Organised, professional and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Practical, honest and willing to work closely with the wider team.
- Focused on quality, standards and long-term relationships.
- Motivated by building something properly, not just hitting short-term targets.
Requirements
- Proven experience in a Contracts Manager, Business Development Manager, Commercial Manager, Project Manager or similar role.
- Experience within electrical contracting, industrial services, building services, facilities management, manufacturing, construction or a related sector.
- Strong commercial awareness and understanding of project profitability.
- Ability to build relationships and develop business opportunities.
- Experience preparing quotations, estimates, tenders or contract proposals.
- Strong communication, negotiation and organisational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple contracts, clients and priorities.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable
- Time served as a qualified electrician or electrical engineer.
- HNC, HND, degree or equivalent qualification in electrical engineering, building services, construction management or a related discipline.
- Experience working in industrial manufacturing, food production, utilities, energy, process, warehousing or similar environments.
- Knowledge of NEC, JCT or other standard forms of contract.
- Experience using job management, estimating or project reporting systems.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary and package, dependent on experience.
- Company vehicle and fuel card.
- Company phone for work and personal use.
- Company credit card for business expenses.
- 30 days annual holiday including Bank Holidays after 1 year.
- Your birthday off each year, in addition to your annual holiday entitlement.

- Living away allowance, where required.
- Full uniform and PPE.
- All job-specific equipment provided.
- A senior role in a growing privately owned business where your contribution will be visible.

About GRAYS
GRAYS Electrical Engineering Limited is a commercial and industrial electrical contractor based in Nottinghamshire.
We work across a range of sectors including industrial manufacturing, commercial premises, education, warehousing, process environments and specialist electrical projects.
We are a growing business, but we are not trying to become a faceless corporate organisation.
We want to grow in the right way, with the right clients, the right team and the right standards.
About You
You may be loyal, hard-working and experienced, but frustrated by the overly corporate side of business development.
You may enjoy winning work, building relationships and managing projects, but want to do that in an environment where common sense, quality and trust still matter.
You may want more influence, more variety and the chance to help shape a business rather than simply report into one.
If that sounds like you, we would welcome a conversation.
No recruitment agencies.
