Carpenter (Multi Skilled), Heritage Conversion Project, Bath
Fixed term contract, several months of continuous work. £140 to £160 per day depending on experience and ability to work to deadlines. Start early September, sooner if you are available.
We are converting a Grade II listed Georgian townhouse in central Bath into five one bedroom flats and need an experienced, multi skilled carpenter to carry the carpentry through the whole building, working from the top floor down.
The work includes:
1. Building the new stud partitions floor by floor, rebuilding some and repairing and reusing the existing ones where possible.
2. Taking out the remaining ceiling joists on the top floor and building a mezzanine floor to detailed drawings, which will be on site (it is a simple arrangement).
3. Insulating the vaulted top floor room and fitting wood panelling at the roof line, working alongside the roofers as they fit new roof lights into the inner slopes.
4. Finishing small areas of demolition, including a shower enclosure and the ground floor flooring.
5. Laying new floorboards through the building from the top down, with skirting where needed.
6. Building the five kitchens, starting at the top floor flat and working down.
You will work alongside our stonemasons, electrician and plumber; the partition phases unlock their first fix, so keeping to programme matters here. This is a Grade II listed building in the Bath conservation area, so careful work to the approved drawings, repair before replacement, and respect for the historic fabric are essential. Experience with period properties is preferred, and sash window or period joinery skills are a bonus, as the building's original windows are being refurbished.
The practical side: on site and working by 8:00am, an 8 hour day with a 30 minute break, away by 4:30pm. The site manager is on site most days and available for questions. You bring your own tools and your own PPE, steel toecap boots as a minimum. All materials are supplied. The site is in central Bath with parking, and the team is paid on a fixed fortnightly cycle, so no chasing invoices.
