Handyperson – Home Maintenance Service
21 hours per week – 3 Days per week
Service Operates Monday – Thursday – 9am – 4.30pm
Pay rate: £13.48 per hour
Muirshiel Centre is a small, local independent charity (Registered Charity SCO18185) based in Port Glasgow. For over 30 years, we have provided day opportunities and support to adults across Inverclyde, alongside a Home Maintenance Service.
Our Home Maintenance Service supports older people, disables people, and vulnerable community members to live safely and comfortably at home. We are looking for a practical, reliable Handyperson with strong general DIY skills, basic gardening ability and experience in painting and decorating. The role involves travelling across Inverclyde, delivering a friendly, person centred service, and ensuring work is completed safely to a high standard.
Applicants should hold a clean driving license (D1 preferred) and be willing to undergo a satisfactory PVG check.
Note: The successful candidate will be required to provide 2 references and successfully apply to the PVG scheme.

Main duties and responsibilities
1. Carry out minor household repairs, including fixing doors, replacing lightbulbs, assembling furniture and fitting curtain rails, as examples.
2. Complete painting and decorating tasks to maintain safe, comfortable home environments.
3. Undertake basic joinery within competence and safety limits.
4. Provide general garden maintenance such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, and general tidying.
5. To contribute to ensuring that the centre is maintained to a high level of cleanliness including engagement in cleaning duties as and when required.
6. Keep accurate records of visits, tasks completed, and materials used.
7. Participate in training and skills development as required to support service development and ensure a flexible, responsive service.
8. Report any risks, concerns or safeguarding issues promptly to the Coordinator/ Manager.
9. Use tools, equipment and vehicles safely and ensure they are maintained appropriately and completing vehicle checks, as required.
10. Actively participate in staff meetings and be familiar with and adhere to all Health and Safety, Lone Working and organisational policies.
11. Communicate clearly with customers about tasks, limitations and safety considerations.
12. Maintain confidentiality and uphold organisational values at all times.
13. Work respectfully within customers homes, ensuring areas are left clean, tidy and safe after tasks are completed.
14. To undertake any other duties deemed appropriate by Service Manager or Management

Person Specification Essential Experience or Skills
- Basic IT experience including the use of laptops

Basic numeracy and literacy
- Competent in general DIY and minor household repairs.
- Ability to carry out basic garden maintenance safely.

Able to complete painting/ decorating tasks to a good standard.

Full, clean UK Driving License

Be a member of the Protection of Vulnerable Group (PVG) Scheme of willing to become a scheme member.
Desirable Experience or Skills Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Experience in a handyperson, trades, or maintenance role.
- Experience maintaining gardens for older or vulnerable people.
- Experience of larger scale decorating or property refresh work.
- Experience completing risk assessments or using safe systems of work.
- Experience using simple record keeping or job tracking systems.
- Full UK manual driving license with D1 endorsement and the ability/ experience of driving minibus.
