Applications are invited for a Locum Specialist Doctor in Rehabilitation Medicine, to join an established team providing specialised rehabilitation within the hyper-acute rehabilitation unit on ARTU at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust.
The Specialist Doctor will be an integral member of the existing Rehabilitation Medicine team and will receive appropriate professional and peer support. Main duties will comprise daily acute medical care of inpatients on the established, UKROC-accredited level 1a inpatients specialist rehabilitation ward (ARTU, Acute Trauma and Rehabilitation Unit). The patient cohort comprises adults with complex disabilities resulting from major traumatic injuries or neurological conditions including severe traumatic brain or spinal cord injury. Many patients have complex medical needs, including tracheostomy care and disorders of consciousness. Doctors are supported by a multidisciplinary team including experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioners, resident doctors and specialist nurses.
Rehabilitation Medicine provides access to a programme of educational team meetings, comprehensive on-site training and teaching. Close links with Keele University offer a range of opportunities for education and research.
- To provide comprehensive medical assessments and appropriate management of patients, including the prevention and treatment of complications or medical emergencies.
- To support the nursing staff and lead in the management of the acutely deteriorating patient
- To provide medical support to the multidisciplinary team and to manage patients from a medical perspective to ensure delivery of safe and high-quality services.
- To interpret, diagnose and process pathology test results and establish appropriate management.
- To ensure prescribing practice is based on current evidence and good practice and compliant with local policies and guidelines.
- To ensure the confidentiality of patient related information and records and comply with information Governance standards.
- To provide comprehensive, accurate and well-written medical documents for discharge correspondence, individual funding applications and other medical reports as required.
- To involve patients and carers in the medical and rehabilitation plans, as appropriate.
- To contribute to a multidisciplinary approach managing the health needs of the patients using
professional evidence-based practice.
- To contribute to the implementation of Integrated Care Pathways and “in house” guidelines which reflect best available evidence e.g. National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance, Sepsis management, and specialty-specific guidance

Whilst the main duties of this post are ward-based, there is scope for flexibility regarding specific individual commitments and particular areas of interest. The postholder will have opportunities to attend outpatient clinics or assess patients referred to the ward from other units. It is anticipated that job plans will be finalised upon appointment through discussion amongst Rehabilitation Consultant colleagues, clinical leads and service managers.
