Mild Steel Bandsaw OperatorOverview
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Mild Steel Bandsaw Operator on self-employed basis to join our manufacturing team. This role involves operating an industrial bandsaw to accurately cut mild steel materials to customer specifications, supporting our fabrication and production processes.
The successful candidate will be responsible for producing accurate straight and mitre (angled) cuts, interpreting engineering drawings and cutting lists, and maintaining high standards of quality, safety and efficiency while minimising material waste.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with previous experience in a structural steel, fabrication, or steel stockholding environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate an Alligator bandsaw safely and efficiently.
- Cut mild steel sections, including beams, channels, angles, box section, tube, plate and flat bar, to customer specifications.
- Set the machine for both straight and mitre (angled) cuts.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, cutting lists and work orders.
- Measure and inspect materials to ensure accuracy and compliance with specifications.
- Load, unload and move steel safely using an overhead crane.
- Carry out routine machine inspections, blade changes and basic preventative maintenance.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
- Work closely with the production and fabrication teams to meet daily production targets.
- Minimise material waste through efficient cutting practices.
- Follow all company Health & Safety policies and procedures.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience operating an industrial bandsaw, preferably an Alligator bandsaw or similar.
- Experience cutting mild steel accurately, including straight and mitre (angled) cuts.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and cutting lists.
- Experience operating an overhead crane (current certification is desirable but not essential).
- Good understanding of measuring equipment and maintaining tight tolerances.
- Basic mechanical knowledge with the ability to carry out routine machine maintenance.
- Good mathematical skills for measuring and calculating cutting dimensions.
- Strong awareness of health and safety within a manufacturing environment.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Desirable Skills
- Experience within the structural steel, fabrication or steel stockholding industry.
- Knowledge of steel grades and material handling procedures.
- Forklift licence or experience operating materials handling equipment.
- Experience with fabrication processes such as drilling, grinding.
