Start your engineering career in the heat pump industry — no experience needed
We're looking for a bright, enthusiastic person who's good with computers and wants to learn a real technical trade. You don't need a heating background. You don't need a degree. You need to be quick on a PC, comfortable with numbers, and genuinely interested in learning how buildings are heated.
We'll teach you the rest.
Thermal Earth is one of the UK's longest-established heat pump specialists. We've completed over 3,500 ground source and air source installations, and we hold exclusive UK distribution rights for MasterTherm heat pump systems. Every home we heat is a home taken off fossil fuels — this is work that matters, in an industry that's growing fast.
What you'll actually be doing
You'll join our design office and learn, step by step, how a heat pump system is designed from scratch:
- Heat loss calculations — working out exactly how much heat a building needs, room by room, using industry design software
- System design — sizing heat pumps, underfloor heating, radiators, cylinders and buffer tanks to match the building
- Technical drawings — producing schematics and layouts using our CAD tools
- Design documentation — preparing the calculation packs and drawings that go to customers, installers and MCS certification
- Supporting the wider team — working alongside senior design engineers, surveyors and project managers
You'll start by assisting on live projects, and progress to running your own designs as your knowledge builds.
What we're looking for
Essential:
- Highly proficient with a PC — fast, confident, and quick to pick up new software. This is the single most important thing.
- Strong grasp of everyday maths (you'll be working with numbers all day)
- Attention to detail — a design error costs real money on site
- Enthusiasm to learn, ask questions, and take on responsibility
- Good written and verbal communication
- Reliable, organised, and happy working as part of a small team
Nice to have (but genuinely not essential):
- Any experience with CAD, Excel, or technical software
- A-levels, BTEC, HNC or similar in maths, science, engineering or construction
- A plumbing, heating or construction background
- Full UK driving licence
We are open on background. School leaver, college leaver, graduate, or someone changing career from another trade — if you're sharp, keen and good on a computer, we want to hear from you.
What you'll get
- £26,000 – £28,000 depending on experience
- Full structured training — you'll be taught heat loss calculation, MCS design standards and system design from the ground up by engineers with decades of experience
- Funded qualifications and a clear progression path from Junior Design Engineer to Design Engineer and beyond
- Modern design office — we invest properly in our software and tools, including AI-assisted design systems. This isn't a paper-and-spreadsheet operation.
- A stable, established employer — over 20 years in the industry, 3,500+ installations, and a full order book
- Real purpose — every system you design cuts a household's carbon emissions for the next 25 years
- 28 days holiday including bank holidays
- Free on-site parking
- Company pension
