Deputy Officer in Charge G6 – Children's Residential Care
Hours: 37 Hours Per Week
Contract: 3+ Month Temporary Contract

We're recruiting a Deputy Officer in Charge G6 to support the management and day-to-day operation of a children's residential home. This is a leadership role, ideal for someone experienced, professional, and committed to providing a safe, nurturing, inclusive and high-quality service for vulnerable children and young people.
About the Role
As a Deputy Officer in Charge, you'll work alongside the Officer in Charge to support the effective management of the residential home, supervise and develop staff, and ensure the needs, rights and wellbeing of young people are fully supported.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Supporting the Officer in Charge in the management and day-to-day operation of the children's residential home
- Helping ensure the home provides a safe, nurturing, inclusive and high-quality service for vulnerable children and young people
- Ensuring young people's social, emotional, psychological, educational, cultural, physical and health needs are understood and appropriately supported
- Promoting the voice, choice and participation of young people in decisions about their lives, care and future
- Encouraging independence, resilience, positive relationships and personal development
- Building and maintaining positive relationships with children, young people, families, carers and other professionals
- Supporting the development and implementation of individual care plans and assessments
- Applying a behaviour support model of care, responding appropriately to challenging behaviour and complex needs
- Ensuring safeguarding responsibilities are fully understood and acted upon, challenging inappropriate practice where necessary
- Supporting the Manager in ensuring the home meets all relevant regulatory and legislative requirements
- Assisting with monitoring the professional competence, performance and development of the staff team
- Supervising, supporting and motivating staff and contributing to effective team working
- Assisting with managing delegated budgets, monitoring expenditure and ensuring resources are used appropriately
- Coordinating, attending and chairing meetings as required, ensuring meetings promote participation, inclusion and clear outcomes
- Preparing accurate reports, records, assessments and documentation within required timescales
- Supporting effective partnership working with social workers, health professionals, education services, families and other agencies
- Promoting positive relationships between the home and the local community and supporting young people to access community facilities
- Assisting the Manager with service development, quality assurance, inspections and continuous improvement
Requirements
We're looking for someone reliable, confident, and committed to achieving positive outcomes for vulnerable children and young people.
You'll ideally have:
- Proven senior-level experience working with children and young people in a residential childcare environment
- A relevant qualification meeting the equivalent criteria for Social Care Wales registration
- Level 3 Diploma in Health & Social Care (Children and Young People) or equivalent
- Strong knowledge of the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016 and other relevant legislation and regulatory requirements
- Sound understanding of child development and the social, emotional, psychological, educational and physical needs of young people
- Experience of managing, supervising and developing staff within a residential childcare setting
- Experience working with a behaviour support model of care and supporting young people with challenging or complex behaviours
- Ability to undertake assessments and contribute to effective care planning
- Strong understanding of safeguarding and duty-of-care responsibilities
- Ability to recognise and challenge inappropriate practice and promote the best interests of young people
- Experience of planning, organising and preparing professional reports and documentation
- Experience of coordinating, attending and chairing meetings effectively
- Knowledge and experience of budget monitoring and financial management
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Ability to work confidently and independently while also supporting and leading a staff team
- Ability to build trusting relationships with young people and promote their voice, choice and participation

Candidate Requirements
