J.W. Buckley Ltd – Bakers & Confectioners, Uppermill
J.W. Buckley Ltd is a busy, well-established bakery and confectionery business in the heart of Uppermill. We are looking for a reliable, enthusiastic, hardworking, and trustworthy Shop Assistant to join our friendly team on a full-time basis.
This is a hands-on role in a fast-paced environment and would suit someone who takes pride in their work, enjoys working with customers, and understands the importance of maintaining high standards throughout the day.
Working Hours
Monday to Friday7:30am – 4:00pm
About the Role
The day starts with preparing the shop for opening. Between 7:30am and 8:00am, the team works together to ensure the shop is fully stocked, organised, and ready for customers.
Daily duties include:
- Carrying large trays of cakes and bakery products into the shop
- Slicing and preparing salad items
- Stocking shelves, counters, and refrigerated displays
- Setting up displays before opening
- Preparing fresh hot and cold sandwiches to order
- Working quickly and efficiently during busy periods
- Multitasking between food preparation, serving customers, and restocking
- Serving customers in a friendly and professional manner
- Handling cash and card transactions
- Replenishing stock throughout the day
- Cleaning work areas and customer areas
- Keeping displays neat, tidy, and well-presented
- Assisting with general day-to-day shop duties
- Making and serving hot drinks
Important Information
This is a physically active role and applicants must be comfortable with:
- Heavy lifting and carrying large trays of products
- Being on their feet for most of the working day
- Working efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Multitasking and prioritising tasks during busy periods
- Completing tasks within set timeframes
- Working as part of a team to ensure the shop is ready for customers each morning

Previous experience in a bakery, food retail, deli, café, or shop environment is beneficial but not essential, as full training will be provided.
Previous experience using a barista-style coffee machine would be an advantage but is not essential.
Pay & Training
- Starting pay is National Minimum Wage/National Living Wage
- Applicants with previous experience in a similar bakery, food retail, café, deli, or shop assistant role may be offered a higher starting rate depending on experience
- Full training will be provided
- A review will take place after the first 3 months to assess progress, performance, and development within the role
