Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Grounds Person/Maintenance Assistant to join our team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for maintaining the appearance, safety, and functionality of our outdoor spaces and facilities. Your energetic approach and hands-on skills will ensure that our grounds are beautifully landscaped, well-kept, and operationally sound. You will work as part of the Estates team to ensure that the buildings and school grounds are in full and proper working order, maintaining a safe and pleasant working environment for all users
Responsibilities
- To carry out minor repairs and or decoration to fixtures, fittings and buildings e.g. securing broken windows, changing light bulbs, lighting tubes and unblocking sinks and drains and report any faults requiring specialist help e.g. electrical contractor to Estates Manager
- To carry out regulatory checks in line with guidance from Estates Manager to ensure lighting,room ventilation/temperatures, hot water temperatures, toilets and drainage are working adequately at all times.
- To make sure the premises are clean, and that rubbish is collected and taken away, and any graffiti is removed immediately. Includes cleaning up when children are ill or have accidents.
- To maintain the grounds and remove litter, marks to walls/doors/windows as required. Includes salting and gritting and clearance of snow on pathways, playground in adverse weather conditions
- To carry out security checks to the buildings and grounds. Unlocking and securing of buildings which may include room hire for non-school activities outside normal school hours.
- To ensure the safe storage of equipment and supplies and the keeping of appropriate records.
- To make sure that all fire safety and health and safety regulations are adhered to eg testing of fire equipment and following the rules for evacuating the buildings and grounds.
- Arranging furniture and preparing rooms for meetings and activities and clearing away afterwards..
Professional Requirements:
- To read, understand and adhere to the range of school policies relating to Health & Safety, Compliance, and Safety at Work.
- To read, understand and adhere to Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy immediately reporting any concerns to D/DSLs.
Site Security:
As agreed with the Estates Manager.
- Follow rota to: - Provide 24-hour on-call availability to respond to emergencies and incidents on-site.
- Lock and unlock the school premises outside regular hours for events, contractors, or emergencies.
- Conduct regular security checks to ensure the site always remains safe and secure
Skills
- Strong background in landscape maintenance and gardening practices with knowledge of horticulture principles
- Mechanical aptitude with experience operating power tools, hand tools, and machinery such as excavators or similar equipment
- Familiarity with irrigation systems for troubleshooting and repairs
- Construction experience is a plus for site improvements or structural repairs
- Ability to perform physical tasks outdoors in various weather conditions while maintaining safety standards
- Excellent teamwork skills with a proactive attitude towards problem-solving and maintenance challenges
- Prior experience working with gardening or horticultural techniques is highly desirable
Pay: £30,000.00 per year
