Cooking & Customer Service Assistant – The Spud Wagon
Location: Reading Train Station, Reading Town Centre
Pay: £13.50 per hour
Hours: 20–30 hours per week
Schedule: Mainly weekend, with some weekday shifts required

The Spud Wagon is a busy food trailer based at Reading Train Station, serving freshly prepared food to customers in the heart of Reading.We’re looking for a reliable, friendly and hardworking Cooking & Customer Service Assistant to join our team. This is a hands on role covering all aspects of running a busy food trailer, from morning food preparation and cooking to serving customers, taking payments, maintaining excellent hygiene standards and helping manage stock.
You’ll be working directly with customers, so we’re looking for someone who is confident, approachable and able to provide great service, even during busy periods.
Your day-to-day duties will include:
- Preparing food and ingredients before service
- Cooking and assembling food to our standards
- Setting up the trailer ready for the day’s trading
- Serving customers face to face in a friendly and professional manner
- Taking card and cash payments and operating the till
- Accurately recording cash transactions and completing daily cash records
- Following food hygiene, allergen and food safety procedures
- Completing daily food safety/food diary records
- Monitoring food temperatures and completing relevant checks
- Keeping preparation, cooking and customer areas clean and organised throughout the day
- Carrying out end-of-day cleaning and closing procedures
- Completing regular deep cleans of the trailer and equipment
- Checking stock levels and carrying out stock takes
- Rotating stock correctly and monitoring use-by/best-before dates
- Helping to minimise food waste
- Reporting low stock, maintenance issues or other problems to the Trailer Manager
- Receiving and putting away deliveries when required
- Ensuring food, packaging and other supplies are stored correctly
- Maintaining high standards of personal hygiene and presentation
- Following all company procedures and health & safety requirements
- Helping with any other reasonable duties required for the smooth day-to-day running of The Spud Wagon.
Who We're Looking For...
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Reliable, punctual and trustworthy
- Friendly and confident when dealing with customers
- Comfortable working in a busy, fast-paced food environment
- Able to work independently and as part of a small team
- Organised and able to keep on top of multiple tasks
- Comfortable handling food, cash and card payments
- Willing to clean and maintain high hygiene standards
- Able to follow instructions and established procedures
- Proactive – someone who can see what needs doing and get on with it
- Flexible with working hours when required
- Previous experience in catering, hospitality, food preparation, cooking, customer service or a similar role would be an advantage, but the right attitude, reliability and willingness to learn are equally important.
- Food hygiene training/qualifications min level 2 required.
Hours & Shifts: The role will offer approximately 20–30 hours per week. Shifts will be a mix of weekend & weekday work, so some flexibility is important. As we are based at Reading Train Station, reliability and punctuality are particularly important. Applicants should be able to travel to Reading town centre reliably for their scheduled start times.
