Role Summary
We are seeking a highly capable, multi-skilled Maintenance Operative with proven experience working specifically within a care home setting. This is a hands-on role requiring a broad skillset across multiple trades, combined with a strong understanding of compliance, safety standards, and the sensitivities of working around vulnerable residents.
You will be responsible for maintaining a safe, compliant, and well-functioning environment, ensuring all works are carried out with minimal disruption to residents.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain positive relationships with residents and team members, responding promptly and respectfully to maintenance-related concerns.
- Carry out a wide range of routine maintenance tasks across the home, including:
- Basic joinery and carpentry repairs
- Lock and door hardware maintenance
- Minor plumbing and electrical work
- Painting, decorating, and general touch-ups
- Flooring repairs and replacements
- Servicing general equipment and systems
- External building maintenance (gutter cleaning, minor roof repairs)
- Lead by example when coordinating contractors and tasks efficiently.
- Maintain and prioritise a shared “to-do” list of property maintenance tasks.
- Monitor and perform health and safety checks, including:
- Fire drills and fire alarm tests
- Emergency lighting inspections
- Water temperature and Legionella checks
- Bed, mattress, and equipment inspections
- Call nurse point
- Ensure timely completion and accurate recording of all safety and regulatory checks.
What We’re Looking For
- Proven maintenance experience (within a care environment or similar is essential)
- Basic skills in plumbing, joinery, electrics, and general building upkeep
- Ideally, experience as a plasterer or roofer
- Proactive attitude with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- A flexible and reliable approach to working hours
- Understanding of and commitment to health and safety and safeguarding
- Must have a full driving licence and access to a reliable vehicle
Additional Information
- Holiday: 5.6 weeks per year (pro-rata), inclusive of bank holidays.
- Transport & Parking: Mileage reimbursed for approved travel. Free staff parking is available at all care homes and head office.
- Communication: Use of WhatsApp is essential for team coordination.
- DBS Check: An Enhanced DBS check is required.
- Probation: 6 months, with performance reviews after 3 and 6 months.
