Job Purpose
The Shift Electrician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and improving electrical systems and equipment across the manufacturing facility. The role is critical in ensuring production equipment operates safely, efficiently, and reliably while supporting continuous improvement initiatives and minimising downtime.
Working within a fast-paced insulation manufacturing environment, the successful candidate will provide reactive and planned maintenance support to production operations and ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance and Repairs
Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities on manufacturing equipment and site services.
- Respond promptly to electrical breakdowns and production issues to minimise downtime.
- Diagnose and rectify electrical faults on machinery, motors, drives, sensors, control systems, and associated equipment.
- Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in accordance with current regulations and company standards.
- Support commissioning of new equipment and production lines.
Fault Finding and Continuous Improvement
- Conduct systematic electrical fault finding using drawings, PLC diagnostics, and testing equipment.
- Identify root causes of recurring equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
- Support continuous improvement projects aimed at increasing equipment reliability, reducing waste, and improving operational efficiency.
- Provide technical recommendations for equipment upgrades and improvements.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to all company Health & Safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are conducted safely and in accordance with electrical regulations and safe systems of work.
- Participate in risk assessments, permit-to-work systems, and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organised working environment in line with 5S principles.
Documentation and Communication
- Record maintenance activities accurately within the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs, reports, and equipment records.
- Communicate effectively with production teams, supervisors, and fellow engineers during shift handovers.
- Escalate significant issues and risks to the Engineering Manager as appropriate.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
- Recognised Electrical Engineering qualification (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, HNC or equivalent). (A must)
- Time-served Electrical Engineer/Electrician apprenticeship.
- Experience working within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Experience with three-phase systems, motors, inverters, sensors, and industrial control systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings.
- Good understanding of Health & Safety requirements in a manufacturing environment.
- Flexible approach to working rotating shifts.
Desirable
- Experience with PLC fault finding (Siemens, Allen Bradley or similar).
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification.
- Experience with automated production equipment.
- Knowledge of CMMS systems.
- Understanding of continuous improvement methodologies.
