We are looking for an experienced and reliable Transport Manager / Class 2 HGV Driver to join our team in Northampton.
This is a hands-on role combining transport management, Operator Licence compliance and Occasional Class 2 driving duties. The successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day management of our transport operation and will be responsible for holding and managing the company's Operator Licence.
You will work closely with the management and site teams to ensure our vehicles, drivers and transport operations are safe, legal, compliant and efficiently managed.
Key Responsibilities
- Take responsibility for the company's Operator Licence and ensure ongoing compliance with all relevant requirements.
- Act as the nominated Transport Manager on the Operator Licence, where appropriately qualified.
- Ensure the company remains compliant with DVSA, Traffic Commissioner and transport legislation requirements.
- Manage the day-to-day transport operation, including vehicle movements, drivers and deliveries.
- Plan and coordinate deliveries and collections efficiently.
- Drive Class 2 vehicles on occasions.
- Ensure drivers comply with drivers' hours, tachograph and Working Time regulations.
- Monitor vehicle maintenance, servicing, inspections and defect reporting.
- Ensure all vehicles are roadworthy, safe and compliant.
- Maintain accurate vehicle, driver and compliance records.
- Carry out regular checks and audits of drivers' hours, tachographs, vehicle defects and maintenance records.
- Ensure vehicles receive the required safety inspections and servicing at the correct intervals.
- Manage driver schedules and allocate vehicles effectively.
- Deal with driver infringements and ensure appropriate corrective action is taken.
- Liaise with garages, maintenance providers, drivers, customers and site teams.
- Assist with DVSA inspections, Operator Licence audits and Traffic Commissioner requirements.
- Monitor fuel usage, vehicle performance and operating costs.
- Maintain and update transport policies and procedures where required.
- Promote a strong culture of health, safety and legal compliance.
- Identify and resolve transport issues quickly and efficiently.
- Support the wider business with logistics and transport requirements.
About You
The successful candidate will be an experienced transport professional who is comfortable taking ownership of an Operator Licence while also undertaking hands-on Class 2 driving duties.
Essential:
- Full UK Class 2 / Category C driving licence.
- Valid Driver CPC qualification.
- Valid Digital Tachograph Card.
- Previous experience in transport management or a senior transport role.
- Good knowledge of UK drivers' hours and tachograph regulations.
- Strong understanding of Operator Licence compliance.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- A responsible and safety-conscious approach.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of the transport function.
Desirable / Preferred:
- Transport Manager CPC / Certificate of Professional Competence.
- Previous experience acting as a nominated Transport Manager.
- Experience managing an Operator Licence.
- Experience managing drivers and a commercial vehicle fleet.
- Knowledge of DVSA and Traffic Commissioner requirements.
- Experience within the construction, haulage or building materials sector.
