Job Title: L&D Foundation Academy Trainer
Salary: The starting salary is £45,583, which includes allowances totalling £3,009.
The salary is broken down as £37,510 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £40,141. Plus, a shift allowance of 12.5% and a location allowance of £2,009 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

L&D Foundation Academy Trainer, the role is to deliver high-quality, inclusive, and operationally relevant learning to police officers, staff, and volunteers that enables individual performance, role competence, and promotes public trust and confidence. This role is central to ensuring that learners across policing are confident, capable, and supported in applying their learning effectively to enable the MPS to deliver More Trust, Less Crime and High Standards.
Policing London is a 24 hour job and the Foundation Academy training hours reflect our dedication to ensure that recruits are prepared for this. This means that this role includes shift and weekend working as required.
Shifts are alternating early turn 0700 - 1500 and late turn 1400 - 2200 Monday-Friday weeks with 1 weekend in 4 (0900-1700), but there needs to be flexibility to meet the criteria of the role as and when required.
The role is categorised as Operational in regard to the Hybrid Working Policy. L&D trainers work within the confines of an 80% student contact aspiration.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver structured, well-prepared learning sessions that align with policing standards, operational practice, and authorised professional practice (APP).
Facilitate interactive, scenario-based, and reflective learning that enables learners to apply knowledge and develop critical thinking and professional judgement.
Adapt delivery to suit the diverse operational roles, learning needs, and prior experience of participants across the service.
Create a safe, inclusive, and professional learning environment that fosters open dialogue, respect, and learning from lived experience.
Use real-life case studies, operational scenarios, role-play, and group exercises to reinforce learning and relevance to frontline practice.
Manage group dynamics effectively, maintaining focus, engagement, and professional standards.
Provide clear, constructive feedback during and after sessions to support learner development and continuous improvement.
Apply knowledge of the College of Policing curriculum frameworks and assessment standards where relevant

Essential For The Role
Essential Skills:
Strong understanding of adult learning principles, and the ability to translate these into effective delivery.
Excellent facilitation and communication skills, including the ability to manage sensitive discussions professionally.
Awareness of the UK policing context, including operational pressures, ethical standards, and public expectations.
Proficiency in managing time, session flow, and learning outcomes in a structured and disciplined environment.
Desirable Skills:
First degree or equivalent L6 qualification
Learning & Teaching qualification at L7 e.g. Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
Experience delivering training in an operational, preferably within the UK policing sector or similar regulated environments.
Experience facilitating group-based learning using a range of delivery methods (face-to-face, virtual, blended).
Confidence in presenting to learners of varying rank, role, and service length.
Recognised learning/training qualification which meets the UK Police Sector Training Standard* or willingness to work towards the UK Police Sector Training Standard accreditation if not already held.
Recognised assessor qualification which meets the UK Police Sector Assessor Standard** or willingness to work towards the UK Police Sector Assessor Standard accreditation if not already held. Examples of this are set out below:
Qualifications that meet the UK Police Sector Training Standard:
College of Policing Trainer Essentials Programme Modules 1-5 (modules 1-3 for face-to-face delivery or modules 1-4 if required to deliver virtually & module 5 for Vocational Assessing)
Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET)
Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET)
Level 6 Diploma in Teaching and Learning
Level 7 Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), or the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
**Qualifications that meet the UK Police Sector Assessor Standard:
College of Policing Trainer Essentials Programme Module 1-5.
Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)
TAQA (Training, Assessment, Quality Assurance) assessor qualification, often referred to as CAVA (Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement), includes three units: Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment (Unit 301), Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment (Unit 302), and Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding (Unit 303).
