Upholstery Specialist / Upholsterer
Job Summary
We are looking for a skilled and reliable Upholstery Specialist to join our workshop team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who takes pride in traditional upholstery craftsmanship as well as modern upholstery techniques.
You will work on a variety of furniture, from individual pieces and restoration projects to bespoke upholstery commissions. Your attention to detail, knowledge of fabrics and materials, and ability to achieve a high-quality finish will be essential.
We work with private clients, interior designers and design professionals, so we are looking for someone who understands the importance of quality, precision and excellent workmanship.
This is a paid position within a friendly and professional workshop environment, with opportunities to develop your skills and work on interesting and varied projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Measure, cut and prepare fabrics, foam, fibre, feather and other upholstery materials accurately.
- Strip and remove existing upholstery carefully while protecting and assessing the furniture frame.
- Carry out upholstery, reupholstery and repair work to a high standard.
- Cut, shape and fabricate bespoke cushions and padding to suit individual furniture designs.
- Use hand tools including scissors, staple guns, tack hammers, webbing tools and seam rippers safely and accurately.
- Operate workshop equipment and power tools, including pneumatic staplers, sewing machines and fabric-cutting equipment.
- Sew and prepare upholstery fabrics, including seams, piping, panels and other finishing details.
- Upholster chairs, armchairs, sofas, dining chairs, headboards and other bespoke furniture pieces.
- Ensure fabrics are correctly aligned, patterned and tensioned, with particular attention to detail on stripes, checks and patterned materials.
- Assemble and finish upholstered furniture, ensuring clean lines, secure fixing and a professional finish.
- Work from measurements, drawings or client/designer specifications where required.
- Handle and move furniture and materials safely within the workshop and during installations.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
- Work efficiently while maintaining our high standards of craftsmanship and quality.
- Communicate professionally with colleagues, clients and interior designers when required.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is:
- Experienced in upholstery or has a strong practical background in furniture making/upholstery.
- Confident using both traditional hand tools and modern upholstery equipment.
- Experienced in cutting and sewing upholstery fabrics.
- Able to work independently and take responsibility for the quality of their work.
- Highly attentive to detail and committed to producing a first-class finish.
- Comfortable working with different fabrics, furniture styles and upholstery techniques.
- Physically fit and able to handle furniture and materials safely.
- Reliable, punctual and organised.
- A good team player with a positive attitude.
- Interested in developing their skills and working on bespoke, high-quality upholstery projects.
