Senior Clinical or Counseling Psychologist or Psychological Therapist – Acute Inpatient Care, Adults of Working Age, North View, North Manchester
Band 7/8a, 30 hours per week.
We are delighted to invite applications for a part time senior psychologist for North View hospital – Manchester adult inpatient services.
Working as part of a team of a dynamic team; 6 qualified and 3 assistant psychologists you will provide a clinical psychology service to the 6 adult inpatient wards and 1 psychiatric intensive care unit in North Manchester. You will be well supported by and work closely with the service’s principal and consultant inpatient psychologists to deliver clinical psychology services to the inpatient wards where you will be based.
Working in these fast paced services, your role will be varied and stimulating and will include developing team formulations to support care, completing psychological assessments, staff training and supervision and delivery of short evidence based psychological interventions. You will oversee the work of the ward assistant psychologist in delivering group and structured individual sessions.
Each ward at North View is staffed by a full multidisciplinary team, and you will work with them to ensure that the psychological needs of service users and staff are understood and met. There is an important emphasis on working collaboratively with our MDT colleagues and providing consultation, training and emotional support to them.
There is a passion in the team to work creatively and inclusively with service users who are often from socially and culturally diverse back grounds and to work in a flexible way to support the wards to become psychologically safer environments that are trauma informed. We also want to promote a trauma informed approach to supporting staff working in In-Patient settings and this includes supporting staff who experience racism and other forms of discrimination.
We are looking for a highly skilled clinician who has experience in working with individuals with the full range of mental health problems assessing and co-developing formulations that can inform service users’ care and treatment.
There are opportunities to work collaboratively with Trust wide research projects and where possible we try to support team members to have training in modalities that are effective in In-Patient care. You will be expected to contribute to service development initiatives and their evaluation by audit and research work as required to support and enable the service’s ongoing improvement.

Job Summary/Purpose
The post holder will work as part of a team of 6 qualified and 3 assistant psychology staff to provide a high-quality specialist clinical psychology service to mental health inpatients and ward staff in North Manchester. The North Manchester service consists of 6 acute ward and a psychiatric intensive care unit. The post holder will be an active member of the acute care workforce, and. on the wards where they are based, will liaise across all sectors of care, providing direction and oversight of psychological assessment, formulation and interventions (individual and group) provided by nominated ward staff. They will offer advice and consultation on psychological care planning to non-psychologist colleagues, as well as to other non-professional carers and workers of other agencies where appropriate.
There will be strong emphasis on training and supervising inpatient practitioners with a specialist role in delivering psychosocial interventions/basic psychological interventions on an individual and group basis. They will carry an individual caseload and deliver short evidence-based interventions as well as carrying out complex assessments to support care and discharge. They will work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures. The post holder will utilise research skills for audit, policy and research within the area served by the teams/service.
They will clinically supervise and line manage the assistant psychologists on their wards to deliver a structured group and individual programme. They will supervise clinical psychology Doctorate Programme trainees when they are on placement in the service.
As part of the ward’s senior clinical team they will ensure the best use of the psychological resource, will ensure that all psychological work in line with local, Trust and national priorities and delivered to the highest possible standard.
