Role Purpose and Key Responsibilities
RICS is seeking a senior professional with deep expertise in building standards and regulation to join our team as Senior Specialist, Building Standards. This is a strategic, visible role where your insight and leadership will shape professional standards and support the built environment through a period of significant change.
You’ll be a trusted source of sector expertise — developing guidance, informing policy, and supporting practitioners and stakeholders across areas such as building control, safety legislation, retrofit, and regulatory compliance. You’ll also represent RICS at public forums, in the media, and with government, helping to ensure professional confidence and public trust in the sector.
This role will suit someone operating at a senior level in areas such as building control, standards, or technical leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead on the development and maintenance of guidance, standards, and technical insight for building professionals
Provide expert interpretation of evolving legislation, including fire and building safety, building regulations, and British Standards
Represent RICS in external forums, including conferences, roundtables, media interviews, and working groups
Support professionals navigating regulatory and legislative change through accessible and practical resources
Work cross-functionally with policy, equality & standards, and press teams to deliver high-impact outputs and thought leadership
About You
You bring senior-level credibility and deep knowledge of building standards, control, and safety. Whether from a regulatory, technical, or leadership background, you’re confident in engaging with complex issues and translating them into clear, practical guidance. You’ll be comfortable speaking publicly, advising stakeholders, and operating with influence and independence.
You will bring:
Strong understanding of core topics including fire safety, building regulations, party walls, retrofit, and sustainability
Experience influencing policy, technical practice, or regulatory frameworks within a building or construction context
Excellent communication skills — written, verbal, and presentation — with confidence to speak publicly on behalf of RICS
A collaborative mindset with a focus on delivering impact through partnership and knowledge-sharing
Experience working with or within local authorities, government, technical bodies, or industry organisations is highly desirable
