Transport Manager
Location: Lavelle Waste Services, Eagle Street, Bolton, BL2 2BU (we also operate a Chorley Depot, PR7 6DH)
Salary: £55,000 - £60,000 per annum dependant on experience
Knowledge/experience in the waste industry would be beneficial.

Transport Manager Summary
Manage the daily operation of the transport fleet and transport team, ensuring collections are delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with industry regulations. The role includes planning routes, managing drivers, managing a transport administration team, maintaining fleet compliance, resolving operational issues, and ensuring excellent service delivery for customers. Strong leadership, organisation, and knowledge of transport and waste regulations are essential.
Route Planning & Operational Control
- Plan and schedule daily waste collection routes to maximise efficiency and minimise downtime.
- Monitor live operations, resolving issues such as access problems, vehicle breakdowns, and service failures.
- Work closely with operations teams to coordinate collections, disposal schedules, and service adjustments.
- Monitor and forecast capacity and demand across Commercial Waste operations.
- Design and implement process improvements and operational changes (e.g. weekend rotas and service restructures).
Driver, Yard & Staff Management
- Manage and support drivers, including daily briefings, ongoing communication, and performance management.
- Oversee the yard staff and conduct daily talks regarding inbound and outbound loads.
- Review and approve Saturday overtime before being passed to payroll.
- Manage recruitment for Drivers and administrative staff with support from the HR Manager.
- Manage the transport administration team and their day to day functions and activites.
Transport & Fleet Management
- Ensure full compliance with transport legislation, including Operator Licence requirements, driver hours, and vehicle safety standards.
- Operate and manage a compliant vehicle fleet in line with EU regulations and the Working Time Directive.
- Oversee vehicle maintenance, inspections, servicing, and defect reporting to keep the fleet safe and operational.
Compliance, Health & Safety
- Ensure all transport activities meet environmental, safety, and waste industry standards.
- Conduct site and operational risk assessments.
- Remain up to date with waste, health & safety, and environmental legislation.
Customer & Supplier Management
- Act as the first point of contact for all non-vehicle-related issues.
- Liaise with customers to address service queries, complaints, and operational changes.
- Establish and maintain supplier relationships and negotiate costs for bins, vehicles, waste disposal, and operational requirements.
- Manage waste inbound and outbound suppliers.
- Attend site visits as and when required.
Administration, Reporting & Data Management
- Maintain accurate records, including tachograph data, infringements, vehicle logs, waste transfer documentation, and compliance reports.
- Produce and present operational and performance reports to Directors on a weekly, monthly, and ad-hoc basis.
Performance Monitoring & Financial Control
- Analyse route performance, fuel usage, and operational KPIs to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Review costs and support budgetary responsibility across operations.
Pay: £55,000.00-£60,000.00 per year
