We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Lecturer in Sports Coaching to join our academic team.
Job Purpose:
To bring practical coaching experience and industry knowledge into the delivery of Sports Coaching programmes, initially at level 4 (Higher National Certificate), and level 5 (Higher National Diploma), supporting students from a range of backgrounds to achieve their educational and career goals. You will plan and deliver engaging, industry-relevant teaching in line with the requirements of awarding bodies such as Pearson, with a strong emphasis on employability, practical coaching skills, and real-world application. You will contribute to the development and delivery of a high-quality, student-focused curriculum, embedding coaching practice, performance analysis, and inclusive participation within the learning experience.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- To plan and deliver teaching across the Sports Coaching provision (e.g. HNC/HND), as allocated by the Course Coordinator or senior management
- To incorporate current coaching practices, safeguarding requirements, and sport sector standards into teaching
- To contribute to the development, planning and continuous improvement of the Sports curriculum
- To develop learning materials, schemes of work, and assessment plans aligned to awarding body requirements
- To assess student work, provide constructive feedback, and monitor student progress, achievement, and attendance
- To participate in internal verification (IQA) and quality assurance processes
- To support students in developing practical coaching skills and employability within the sport and fitness sector
- To provide academic and pastoral support to learners
- To engage with industry developments and develop and maintain links with local sports organisations where possible
- To participate in team meetings, standardisation activities, and staff development activities
- To maintain accurate records in line with centre and awarding body requirements
- To ensure compliance with safeguarding, health & safety, and equality policies
- To contribute to course reviews, self-assessment, and quality improvement planning
- To undertake any other duties appropriate to the role
Person specification:
1. Knowledge
- Strong understanding of Sports Coaching principles and the wider sport sector
- Knowledge of coaching methodologies, athlete development, safeguarding, and inclusive practice
- Understanding of vocational education and Pearson BTEC requirements
2. Skills
- Effective teaching and practical coaching delivery skills
- Ability to engage learners through both theory and practical sessions
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Ability to motivate and support learners from diverse backgrounds
- Clear communication skills, both written and verbal
3. Aptitude
- Ability to work collaboratively within a teaching team
- Commitment to student success and inclusive learning
- Ability to contribute to programme delivery and development
Qualifications:
- A relevant degree in Sports Coaching, or a related discipline- Essential
- A Master’s degree in a relevant subject - Essential
- A recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, CertEd, or Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training), or willingness to work towards one- Essential
- Relevant coaching qualifications (e.g. NGB Level 2 or above) - Essential
Knowledge and Experience:
- Practical experience in sports coaching (e.g. club, community, academy or school settings) - Essential
- Experience working with a range of participants (e.g. youth, adults, beginners)
- Experience teaching or training in further or higher education, or a coaching/training environment
- Experience delivering or assessing vocational qualifications (e.g. BTEC HNC/HND)
- Knowledge of coaching pedagogy and participant development
- Knowledge of inclusive coaching practice
- Understanding of safeguarding, welfare and duty of care within sport
- Knowledge of community sport and physical activity initiatives
- Understanding of reflective practice and coach development
4. Previous Experience
- Practical sports coaching experience
- Experience working with diverse participant groups including children, young people and adults
- Experience planning, delivering and evaluating coaching sessions
- Experience applying safeguarding and welfare procedures
