Job Overview
We're looking for an experienced engineer to take ownership of our server infrastructure and lead our biggest technical projects. This is a varied role - covering everything from Microsoft 365 migrations and server deployments to network and firewall configuration. You'll also be the technical voice in the room when we're pitching our services to new customers, as well as the person who then goes and delivers the work.
We rent rack space in a data centre, which hosts our server cluster running multiple RDS environments. You'll be responsible for keeping this running smoothly, alongside project work for customers.
You'll be working within a small, close-knit team where everyone pitches in. This suits someone who's technically strong but also enjoys talking to people, explaining things in plain English, and helping close a deal - not just someone who wants to stay heads-down on the server.
Duties
- Act as the senior escalation point (3rd line) for support tickets and onsite work when issues go beyond standard support
- Own and maintain our server cluster (hosted in rented rack space) - performance, resilience, and day-to-day health of the multiple RDS environments running on it
- Provide networking expertise across switching, routing, firewalls, and VPNs
- Install and configure firewalls and networks, including VPN tunnels, VLANs, and managed switches
- Plan and roll out new servers and services, from initial build through to production, including at customer premises
- Deploy and configure Microsoft 365 services, including SharePoint, Teams, Exchange Online, and Azure
- Lead complex projects including Microsoft 365 migrations, Microsoft Fabric implementations, and VoIP platform migrations
- Configure and manage enterprise backup and recovery solutions (e.g. Veeam)
- Take part in an on-call rota for server and network infrastructure issues only
- Attend meetings with potential new customers to explain our technical capability and help win new business
- Work closely with the wider team, sharing knowledge and supporting less experienced engineers as they develop
- Step in to look after the team and handle customer enquiries when the CTO is unavailable (full training provided)
- Design and build the occasional API integration between internal systems and customer platforms
What We're Looking For
- Solid 3rd line support experience
- Hands-on server experience - virtualisation, storage, backups
- In-depth knowledge of Windows Server operating systems
- Strong knowledge of Active Directory installation and configuration
- Strong knowledge of wired and wireless networking, including VPN tunnels, VLANs, managed switches, and firewalls
- Experience deploying and configuring Microsoft 365 services (SharePoint, Teams, Exchange Online, Azure)
- Experience configuring and managing enterprise backup and recovery solutions (e.g. Veeam)
- VoIP experience
- Comfortable presenting technical capability to non-technical customers in plain English
- Calm under pressure
- Full UK driving licence and own car
- A team player who's happy sharing knowledge as well as picking it up from others
Desirable
- Experience with Microsoft Azure and/or Microsoft Fabric
- Microsoft certification or equivalent qualification
- Experience working with rack-mounted server infrastructure or colocation environments
- Experience configuring and supporting a Microsoft Hyper-V environment
- Experience planning and managing IT projects
- Experience building or maintaining APIs
