About Birmingham City University
At Birmingham City University, we are a diverse and inclusive learning community of over 31,400 students from more than 120 countries. We aim to become an exemplar anchor institution, creating and sharing knowledge for a better and more inclusive society. We are committed to providing a transformational educational experience, supporting world-class research, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment for our staff.
Recognised as one of the UK’s Top 250 employers (Financial Times & Statista), we pride ourselves on being a place where colleagues feel valued, supported, and able to grow their careers while contributing to the success of our students and communities.
Our student demographic reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Birmingham itself, with a significant proportion of students from minoritised ethnic backgrounds and the majority of our home students coming from the West Midlands. This diversity is a strength, and it calls for a workforce that is equipped to challenge deficit narratives and thinking — those assumptions that position students from underrepresented groups as lacking rather than recognising their assets, strengths and potential.
By embracing this perspective, we aim to create an environment where all students and colleagues can thrive, and where our work contributes positively to the social, cultural and economic life of Birmingham and beyond.
Role Summary
We’re looking for a creative, driven and detail-focused Content Officer to join our expanding Subject Content team – we’re the storytellers behind showcasing BCU’s course offering to our prospective students, their families and other audiences.
In this important role, you’ll help deliver our subject-specific and digital content strategy, producing impactful stories - in a range of formats for multiple channels - that inspire action and elevate our profile across the UK and internationally.
You’ll play a hands-on role in growing our student body by producing standout social media content, dynamic video and event coverage, high-quality photography and compelling written content that reflects the real experiences of our students, alumni and academic communities.
We’re looking for someone with proven experience in content creation and strong technical production skills – particularly in video and photography – who can confidently take ideas from concept through to delivery.
If you’re passionate about storytelling, excited by creative challenge and ready to make a measurable impact, we’d love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
-
Produce high-quality, engaging multimedia content – including photography, video, and copy – that showcases BCU’s courses, student experience and graduate outcomes across media channels, website, events, print and campaigns.
-
Create subject-focused content that highlights the strengths of our course offering, with a particular emphasis on employability, industry connections, student success and real-world learning.
-
Manage and coordinate content activity across social and digital channels, working with stakeholders across the University to plan, schedule and deliver content that supports awareness, consideration and conversion.
-
Play a key role in student recruitment campaigns, delivering content-first approaches that inform, inspire, and convert.
-
Capture and promote University and School-led activity including events, exhibitions and festivals such as Open Days, Offer Holder Days, Innovation Fest and Inspired Festival and more.
-
Work collaboratively with colleagues across Marketing, Recruitment and Communications, including the wider Content Team, CRM and Campaigns.
-
Support content needs across a range of channels – from paid and organic social to email, print, digital campaigns, and events.
-
Bring fresh creative ideas that reflect current trends in social media, videography, and digital storytelling, while identifying new opportunities to enhance audience engagement.
About you
You’ll be a confident and collaborative content creator with a strong visual eye and a passion for storytelling. You’ll be excited by the challenge of capturing the spirit of our students and the city we call home.
You’ll also bring:
-
A portfolio to demonstrate strong skills in social media strategy, creation, management and community engagement.
-
Proven experience in photography and videography, including editing using industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Cloud apps and/or DaVinci Resolve for different platforms and channels.
-
An understanding of content-led marketing and how to tailor work for a variety of digital channels and audiences.
-
Excellent copywriting and proofing skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
-
Experience with content management systems (CMS) – while not essential, it’s a bonus.
-
The ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and stay creatively inspired.
-
A first degree or equivalent experience.
