Job Summary
Hyde Lea Limited is a 19-bed residential dementia care home providing a safe, comfortable and homely environment for our residents.
We are seeking a reliable, caring and conscientious Cleaner to join our team. The Cleaner will be responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and presentation throughout the home.
The role is particularly important within a dementia residential setting, where residents may have specific environmental needs. The successful candidate must understand the importance of creating a clean, safe, calm and welcoming environment while respecting residents' privacy, dignity and routines.
The Cleaner will work closely with care staff and management to ensure all areas of Hyde Lea are maintained to a consistently high standard.
Key ResponsibilitiesGeneral Cleaning
- Clean resident bedrooms and communal areas to a high standard.
- Clean corridors, lounges, dining areas, offices and other designated areas.
- Clean bathrooms, toilets and washroom facilities thoroughly.
- Clean floors using appropriate cleaning methods and equipment.
- Dust and clean furniture, surfaces, skirting boards, doors and fixtures.
- Empty waste bins and dispose of waste safely in accordance with procedures.
- Clean frequently touched surfaces regularly.
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the home.
- Respond promptly to spills, accidents or areas requiring additional cleaning.
Resident Bedrooms
- Clean residents' bedrooms respectfully and with consideration for their personal belongings.
- Follow residents' individual routines and preferences where known.
- Ensure bedrooms are clean, tidy and free from unnecessary hazards.
- Report any damage, maintenance issues or concerns identified within residents' rooms.
- Never move or dispose of residents' personal belongings without appropriate permission.
- Maintain residents' privacy and dignity at all times.
Bathrooms and Toilets
- Thoroughly clean and disinfect toilets, sinks, taps, showers and other bathroom facilities.
- Maintain appropriate hygiene standards throughout the day.
- Ensure floors are kept clean and free from slip hazards.
- Replenish cleaning and hygiene supplies where required.
- Report any damage, leaks, blockages or other maintenance concerns.
Infection Prevention and Control
- Follow Hyde Lea's infection prevention and control procedures.
- Use appropriate cleaning products and equipment correctly.
- Follow colour-coded cleaning procedures where applicable.
- Pay particular attention to high-touch areas.
- Use appropriate PPE when required.
- Ensure cleaning equipment is cleaned and stored appropriately.
- Report infection control concerns to the appropriate senior member of staff.
- Follow enhanced cleaning procedures when required due to illness, infection or an outbreak.
Dementia-Friendly Cleaning
Working in a dementia residential home requires patience, awareness and sensitivity.
The Cleaner must:
- Be respectful and reassuring when working around residents.
- Understand that some residents may become confused or anxious when routines or environments change.
- Avoid creating unnecessary noise or disruption.
- Explain what they are doing if a resident approaches or asks questions.
- Never block corridors or exits unnecessarily.
- Ensure cleaning equipment is not left unattended where it could present a risk to residents.
- Never leave cleaning chemicals or hazardous substances accessible to residents.
- Report concerns about residents' wellbeing or safety to care staff.
- Treat all residents with dignity, kindness and respect.
Health and Safety
- Follow all Hyde Lea health and safety procedures.
- Use cleaning equipment safely and appropriately.
- Follow COSHH procedures when using cleaning chemicals.
- Ensure chemicals are stored securely and correctly.
- Use warning signs when floors are wet or slippery.
- Report hazards, damage or maintenance issues immediately.
- Take reasonable steps to prevent slips, trips and falls.
- Never leave potentially hazardous equipment unattended.
- Follow fire safety procedures and keep fire exits and escape routes clear.
Waste Management
- Empty general waste and other designated waste bins.
- Follow the home's waste disposal procedures.
- Ensure waste is appropriately bagged and transported.
- Follow infection control procedures when handling waste.
- Report any concerns regarding waste disposal.
Equipment and Cleaning Materials
- Use cleaning products and equipment in accordance with manufacturers' instructions.
- Maintain cleaning equipment in a clean and safe condition.
- Report damaged or faulty equipment.
- Ensure cleaning products are stored securely.
- Monitor cleaning supplies and inform management when stocks are running low.
- Never mix cleaning chemicals unless specifically instructed and safe to do so.
Communication and Teamwork
- Work cooperatively with care staff, management and other members of the team.
- Communicate any concerns promptly.
- Report maintenance issues identified during cleaning.
- Report spillages, damage, infection concerns or environmental hazards.
- Respect residents, relatives, visitors and colleagues.
- Maintain professional boundaries at all times.
Safeguarding
The Cleaner has a responsibility to help maintain a safe environment for residents.
The Cleaner must:
- Report any safeguarding concerns immediately to the appropriate senior member of staff.
- Report concerns about a resident's welfare or safety.
- Never engage in inappropriate behaviour towards residents.
- Maintain professional boundaries.
- Respect residents' privacy and dignity.
- Follow Hyde Lea's safeguarding policies and procedures.
Confidentiality
- Maintain confidentiality regarding residents, relatives, staff and the operation of Hyde Lea.
- Do not discuss residents' personal information with unauthorised individuals.
- Do not access resident records unless specifically authorised as part of the role.
- Maintain professional conduct when working in residents' bedrooms and personal spaces.
