Job Overview
First Strokes Swim Schools Ltd is looking for a friendly, enthusiastic and reliable Leisure Team Member to join our team.
This is a varied, hands-on role combining reception and administration duties, customer service, site operations and poolside support. You will play an important part in creating a welcoming, safe and professional environment for our swimmers and their families from the moment they arrive.
The ideal candidate will be confident working with children and families, have strong customer service skills and ideally have previous experience within an administration, reception, leisure or swim school environment.
You do not need to hold all swimming or lifeguarding qualifications before applying. For the right candidate, we are happy to support you in gaining the required qualifications.
Key Responsibilities - Reception & Customer Service
- Welcome swimmers, parents and visitors in a friendly and professional manner.
- Provide excellent customer service both face-to-face and over the telephone.
- Respond to customer enquiries and support families with lesson, activity and general swimming enquiries.
- Complete general reception and administrative duties.
- Support with bookings, customer accounts and maintaining accurate records.
- Respond to emails and telephone enquiries promptly and professionally.
- Take payments and support with reception/till procedures.
- Promote First Strokes swimming lessons, activities, Just Swims, birthday parties and other services.
- Help maintain a clean, organised and welcoming reception and customer area.
Poolside & Swimming Support
- Work alongside our Lead Swimming Teachers as a Poolside Support Teacher/Swim Assistant.
- Assist children during swimming lessons and help create a positive and encouraging learning environment.
- Support the Lead Teacher with class organisation, equipment and swimmer safety.
- Help children build their confidence in the water.
- Follow First Strokes teaching standards, safeguarding procedures and pool safety requirements.
- Support with setting up and clearing away equipment before and after sessions.
- Where appropriately qualified, assist with lifeguarding and supervision of swimming activities and sessions.
- Maintain appropriate supervision and remain alert to swimmer safety at all times.
Leisure & Site Operations
- Help maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the facility, including reception, poolside and changing areas.
- Carry out routine checks and report maintenance concerns, hazards or defects to the management team.
- Support with poolside safety and ensure company procedures are followed.
- Assist with First Strokes activities including Just Swims, Family Fun sessions, holiday activities, swimming lessons and birthday parties.
- Work closely with teachers, lifeguards, managers and other Leisure Team Members to ensure the site operates safely and efficiently.
- Complete duties delegated by the management team to support the smooth running of the centre.
About You

- Is confident completing administration and reception-based tasks.
- Is organised and able to manage different responsibilities during a shift.
- Can work effectively as part of a team.
- Is proactive and willing to get involved across reception, poolside and the wider centre.
- Understands the importance of safeguarding, health & safety and maintaining professional standards.
- Is comfortable working in a busy leisure and swimming environment.
- Is reliable, punctual and professional.
- Can work a mixture of shifts, including evenings and weekends.
Previous experience working with children is highly desirable, alongside experience in an administration or reception role. Experience within a leisure centre, swimming pool or swim school environment would be particularly beneficial.
QualificationsRequired
- Enhanced DBS Check – or willingness to complete one as part of the employment process.
- A willingness to undertake the training and qualifications required for the role.
Desirable
- National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)
- Level 1 Swimming Assistant / Assistant Swimming Teacher qualification
- Previous safeguarding and/or First Aid training
Don't already hold an NPLQ or Level 1 Swimming Assistant qualification?
We would still love to hear from the right candidate. We are happy to employ candidates without these qualifications; however, you will be expected to work towards and successfully obtain the required qualifications as part of your development within First Strokes.
Holding these qualifications may also provide opportunities to develop further within the company.

Working Hours
This role requires flexibility, with shifts potentially covering weekdays, evenings and weekends depending on the needs of the centre.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can offer reliable availability around our busiest swimming lesson and leisure periods.
