Shalamar Children's Home Shalamar Children's Home is looking for a reliable, skilled, and hardworking Handy Person / Maintenance Operative to help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for the children and young people in our care. This is a varied and rewarding role, ideal for someone who enjoys practical work, takes pride in maintaining high standards, and can work independently using their own initiative.
Key responsibilities
- Maintenance and repair work, including painting, decorating, basic carpentry, and drywall repairs.
- Complete routine inspections to identify maintenance issues and resolve them promptly.
- Install fixtures, fittings, furniture, and appliances as required.
- Undertake basic plumbing and electrical repairs where appropriate.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from the home.
- Check, clean, and carry out basic maintenance of company vehicles.
- Clean windows and ensure the premises remain presentable.
- Maintain gardens and outdoor areas, including mowing lawns and general upkeep.
- Keep workshops, storage areas, and workspaces clean, organised, and safe.
- Support the home with any other maintenance or facilities-related tasks as required.
About You
We're looking for someone who is dependable, practical, and committed to maintaining a high-quality environment for children and young people.
You will have:
- A full UK manual driving licence (essential).
- A willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
- Previous experience in a handy person, maintenance, or similar role is desirable, but not essential.
- Confidence in carrying out a wide range of general maintenance tasks.
- Experience using hand and power tools safely.
- A good understanding of basic plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and general property maintenance.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- A positive attitude, flexibility, and a strong work ethic.
