About the Role
Yellow Rail is seeking experienced Fabricator/Welder Contractors to support a significant rail vehicle project based in Derby. This is a self-employed contract opportunity for up to 18 months, offering consistent work on the fabrication, assembly, modification, and repair of rail car carrier structures and components. Working within a skilled workshop team, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality fabrication and welding work while maintaining the highest standards of safety, workmanship, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Fabricate, assemble, and weld rail car carrier structures and components to engineering specifications.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, welding symbols, and technical instructions.
- Measure, mark out, cut, prepare, and fit steel components prior to welding.
- Carry out MIG/MAG welding in accordance with approved welding procedures.
- Perform welding in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
- Complete fabrication repairs, modifications, and new-build work as required.
- Inspect completed work to ensure it meets the required quality standards.
- Report defects, drawing discrepancies, material shortages, and production issues promptly.
- Operate fabrication and welding equipment safely and effectively.
Person Specification
Essential
- Proven experience as a Fabricator/Welder within rail, heavy engineering, manufacturing, or a similar environment.
- Strong MIG/MAG welding experience.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and fabrication specifications.
- Experience working with structural steel assemblies.
- High level of attention to detail and workmanship.
- Strong commitment to health and safety requirements.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet project milestones.
Desirable
- Previous rail industry experience.
- Current or previous welding qualifications/certifications.
- Experience working on rolling stock, rail vehicles, freight wagons, or similar heavy fabrication projects.
- Overhead crane or lifting equipment experience.
