The Housekeeper in the Paediatric Emergency Department at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organised clinical environment within a fast-paced emergency care setting. The postholder supports high standards of infection prevention and control, ensuring clinical and non-clinical areas are clean, hygienic, and appropriately prepared for patient care at all times.
The role involves maintaining equipment cleanliness and readiness, managing and replenishing stock levels, and ensuring stores are organised and well maintained. The Housekeeper also supports the ordering, storage, and distribution of food and drink supplies for patients and families, contributing to overall patient comfort and experience.
A key aspect of the role is contributing to positive patient experience outcomes, including WMTM and FFT feedback, by ensuring a welcoming, responsive, and well-maintained environment. The postholder works closely with nursing, medical, and support teams to ensure smooth operational flow within the department and safe, timely patient care.
Maintain high standards of cleanliness across clinical and non-clinical areas in line with infection prevention and control policies
Ensure equipment is cleaned, checked, and ready for immediate use
Manage stock levels, including ordering, replenishment, and organisation of supplies and stores
Support safe storage and rotation of food and drink items in line with hygiene standards
Assist with the distribution of food and beverages to patients and families
Ensure the department is well maintained, organised, and free from clutter or hazards
Contribute to a positive patient and family experience, supporting FFT and WMTM feedback outcomes
Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to support patient flow and departmental efficiency
Report any environmental or equipment issues promptly to ensure patient and staff safety

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
As part of our commitment to safeguarding patients and staff, many roles at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This is a standard process across the NHS and helps us ensure a safe environment for everyone.
What is a DBS Check?
A DBS check is a background check that reveals any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings. The level of check required depends on the role:
Standard DBS : Checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.
Enhanced DBS : Includes the above, plus any additional information held by local police that’s considered relevant to the role.
Enhanced with Barred Lists: Includes all of the above, plus checks against the children’s and/or adults’ barred lists.
Who Needs a DBS Check
Most roles involving direct patient contact, working with children or vulnerable adults, or access to sensitive information will require a DBS check. The job advert and recruitment team will let you know if this applies to your role.
The Costs for a DBS
At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. This means that the cost of submitting and processing a DBS application if you are successful and join us, will be deducted from your salary within the first three months of employment. If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.
