Sanctuary Personnel is currently recruiting for an experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join a specialist Children’s Occupational Therapy service in Inverness.
This is an excellent locum opportunity for an Occupational Therapist with experience supporting children and young people, particularly around specialist equipment, adaptations and functional independence.
The role offers the opportunity to work across a community-based service, supporting children and young people in a variety of settings including homes, schools, nurseries and clinics.

About the Role
You will manage your own caseload of children and young people with a range of physical, developmental and neurodevelopmental conditions that impact their ability to participate in everyday activities such as self-care, education, play and leisure.
Working as an autonomous practitioner, you will undertake specialist assessments, provide evidence-based interventions and make recommendations for equipment, adaptations and strategies that promote independence and improve functional outcomes.
You will work closely with children, young people, parents and carers, alongside education, health and social care professionals, to provide a coordinated service centred around the needs of each child.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage an allocated caseload of children and young people, prioritising referrals according to clinical need.
- Complete specialist Occupational Therapy assessments using advanced clinical reasoning.
- Assess functional abilities and identify barriers to independence and participation.
- Assess, recommend and review specialist equipment and adaptations.
- Make recommendations for home and school adaptations where required.
- Provide advice and strategies to support children's functional development and independence.
- Deliver individualised Occupational Therapy interventions in line with agreed goals.
- Work across a range of community settings, including homes, schools, nurseries and clinics.
- Undertake environmental and moving and handling assessments.
- Provide training, advice and support to parents, carers, education staff and other professionals.
- Work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team and other agencies involved in the child's care.
- Prepare detailed clinical reports and contribute to relevant child planning processes.
- Review and evaluate interventions, making professional decisions regarding ongoing treatment or discharge.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and documentation in accordance with professional standards.
- Participate in clinical supervision, CPD, service development and quality improvement activity.
- Support colleagues and students where appropriate.
- Contribute specialist knowledge to the wider Children’s Occupational Therapy service.
Equipment & Adaptations
A key aspect of the role is assessing and recommending specialist equipment and environmental adaptations to support children and young people's safety, mobility, self-care and independence.
This may include:
- Wheelchairs and buggies
- Specialist and functional seating
- Hoists and slings
- Bathing and toileting equipment
- Sleep systems
- Feeding and drinking aids
- Writing and classroom equipment
- Postural support equipment
- Home and school adaptations
You will use your clinical expertise to determine the most appropriate equipment or adaptation for each child's individual circumstances, providing advice and reviewing its effectiveness over time.
About You
The successful candidate will have:
- A recognised Occupational Therapy degree or equivalent qualification.
- Current HCPC registration.
- Previous post-registration Occupational Therapy experience.
- Experience working with children and/or young people is highly desirable.
- Experience or knowledge of specialist equipment, adaptations and functional assessments.
- Strong knowledge of Occupational Therapy assessments and evidence-based therapeutic approaches.
- The ability to independently manage and prioritise a clinical caseload.
- Excellent assessment, analytical and clinical reasoning skills.
- Strong communication, negotiation and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team.
- Good organisational and time-management skills.
- A professional, empathetic and child-centred approach.
- The ability to travel between different locations as required.
Experience with neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, developmental delay or sensory processing difficulties would be advantageous.
