About the Role
We’re looking for a reliable, enthusiastic Kitchen Assistant to join the River Cottage team. This role sits at the heart of our cookery school and kitchen operations, supporting both our chefs and supervising our junior kitchen porters. It’s a hands-on position ideal for someone who enjoys working with fresh, seasonal produce and helping deliver the smooth running of kitchen operations. We’re looking for someone who takes pride in maintaining high standards and thrives in a friendly, active, fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
· Kitchen Porter Duties
o Maintain a clean, organised kitchen environment, including washing up, cleaning equipment and workspaces
o Supporting general kitchen hygiene and safety standards
o Assisting with ad hoc maintenance duties, delivery management and stock control (which may include assisting with moving heavy goods)
· Food Preparation for the Cookery School
o Weighing out ingredients for classes and demonstrations
o Preparing vegetables and organic produce from our kitchen garden
o Assisting chefs with basic prep tasks as required
· Team Support & Supervision:
o Provide guidance and day-to-day support to junior kitchen porters
o Help ensure smooth workflow and consistent standards across the kitchen team
What We’re Looking For
· 20 hours per week, including weekend and evening availability
· A positive, can-do attitude and willingness to learn
· Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team
· Comfort working in a busy kitchen environment
· An interest in sustainable food, seasonal produce and the River Cottage ethos is a bonus
· Full UK driving licence (due to the rural nature of our farm staff, you will need to be able to drive our company vehicles)
