Due to the nature of the service and the needs of the women we support, the organisation recognises the importance of providing female residents with access to female support staff. Many of the women accessing our services have experienced domestic abuse, sexual violence, exploitation, trafficking, coercive control, homelessness, substance misuse, involvement with the criminal justice system, and other forms of gender-based trauma. Female residents frequently express a preference for discussing highly sensitive and personal matters with female workers, and this contributes significantly to feelings of safety, trust and engagement. In accordance with our safeguarding obligations and commitment to trauma-informed practice, we consider the provision of female support to be an essential component of the service we provide.
Where appropriate, and subject to the provisions of the Equality Act 2010, the organisation may rely upon the occupational requirement provisions contained within Schedule 9 of the Act where being female is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim in the delivery of services to vulnerable women.
