Nursery Chef Assistant: Job Summary
We are looking for a reliable, enthusiastic Nursery Chef Assistant to support our nursery kitchen Chef in preparing and serving healthy, nutritious meals and snacks for young children.
The ideal candidate will help with basic food preparation, maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene, supporting safe food handling, and ensuring the kitchen runs smoothly throughout the day. This role is important in helping us provide children with fresh, balanced meals in a safe, clean and welcoming nursery environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Nursery Chef with daily food preparation, including washing, peeling, chopping and organising ingredients.
- Support with preparing and serving meals and snacks for children in line with the nursery menu.
- Follow all food hygiene, health and safety, and allergy procedures carefully.
- Help ensure meals are prepared safely for children with allergies, intolerances or dietary requirements.
- Maintain a clean, tidy and organised kitchen at all times.
- Wash kitchen equipment, utensils, dishes and food preparation areas.
- Support with receiving, storing and rotating food deliveries correctly.
- Help monitor stock levels and inform the Chef when supplies need replenishing.
- Assist with setting up and clearing away after mealtimes when required.
- Work closely with the nursery team to ensure mealtimes run smoothly and safely.
- Follow nursery policies and procedures, including safeguarding, food safety and hygiene expectations.
- Support the Chef during busy periods to ensure meals are prepared and served on time.
Experience and Skills
- Previous experience in a kitchen, catering, nursery or school environment is desirable, but not essential. Training will be provided
- Basic understanding of food hygiene and safe food handling is beneficial, but willingness to learn is essential
- A Food Hygiene Certificate is desirable, but training can be provided for the right candidate.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to work efficiently.
- A positive, flexible and helpful attitude.
- Ability to work well as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn and follow instructions carefully.
- A caring and responsible approach when working in an environment with young children.
