We’re seeking a committed and hardworking Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant to join a forward-thinking and inclusive specialist setting from April 2026. This is a chance to play a vital role in creating a safe, respectful, and positive environment for learners who may find mainstream education difficult and challenging.
The role:
As a Teaching Assistant in a Specialist SEMH School, you will work closely with students who face barriers to learning due to behavioural and emotional difficulties. Your role will involve building strong, trusting relationships with learners to help them develop positive behaviour patterns, boost their confidence, and achieve their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.
You will collaborate with teachers, support staff, and other professionals to implement tailored strategies and interventions that meet the individual needs of each student. Whether working one-to-one or in small groups, your goal will be to create a supportive and structured learning environment where students can thrive.
You would be working alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team to support pupils navigating behavioural and emotional barriers. You’ll form trusting connections that foster confidence, self-regulation, and progress - academically, socially and personally.
Your responsibilities:
- Delivering one-to-one and small-group support, using a calm and consistent approach.
- Assisting class teachers by adapting learning activities to meet individual needs of students.
- Supporting emotional resilience and encouraging positive social behaviour
- Observing and tracking development to help shape future interventions keeping learners engaged and on track
- Modelling empathy, calm communication, and patience in all interactions both in class and across the school.
- Contributing to behaviour plans and sharing insights with the wider team and external professionals.
What we are looking for:
- A background in working with children and young people who have Social Emotional Mental Health or challenging behavioural needs.
- Familiarity with de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed approaches.
- Strong communication skills and resilience in emotionally demanding and adverse situations.
- A proactive, empathetic, and flexible approach to supporting students’ needs.
- A genuine passion for working with vulnerable young people and helping them overcome barriers to learning.
- Experience within Education, Youth Work, Health and Social Care, or Support Work is welcome.
- A minimum GCSE in English and Math's with a Grade for 4 or higher (A-C).
Why Apply?
- Be apart of a passionate, knowledgeable, and empathetic school community in Guildford, Surrey.
- Receive ongoing support and tailored CPD in SEMH and behavioural support techniques.
- Make a real impact on the lives of learners needing encouragement and advocacy.
- Embrace a role full of variety, reward, and personal growth.
If you’re motivated to inspire and support learners with SEMH needs and behavioural challenges, we would love to hear from you. Apply today to be part of a passionate team dedicated to creating brighter futures.
