Job Summary
We are looking for a caring, reliable and enthusiastic Cook / Care Assistant to join our friendly team at Heaton House Care Home.
This is a varied role combining kitchen and cooking responsibilities with care duties. The successful candidate will help prepare nutritious and enjoyable meals for our residents while also supporting them with their day-to-day care needs.
We are looking for someone who enjoys working with older people, takes pride in preparing good-quality food and is happy to work as part of a supportive care team.
Key Responsibilities
Cooking & Kitchen Duties
- Prepare and serve fresh, nutritious and well-balanced meals for residents.
- Cater for individual dietary requirements, allergies, preferences and modified diets as required.
- Follow planned menus while maintaining high standards of food quality and presentation.
- Maintain excellent standards of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the kitchen and dining areas.
- Follow food hygiene, health and safety, infection prevention and care home procedures.
- Monitor food and kitchen supplies and assist with stock control and storage.
- Ensure food is stored, prepared and served safely.
- Work with the care team to ensure residents' individual nutritional and hydration needs are supported.
Care Duties
- Provide compassionate and person-centred support to residents.
- Assist residents with daily living activities and personal care when required.
- Support residents with mobility while promoting independence wherever possible.
- Provide companionship and emotional support, treating every resident with dignity and respect.
- Follow individual care plans and report any changes or concerns regarding a resident's wellbeing.
- Maintain accurate records and complete required documentation.
- Communicate effectively with residents, relatives and other members of the care team.
- Support residents to participate in activities, appointments and outings where required.
Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate will:
- Have previous cooking or kitchen experience, preferably within a care home or similar environment.
- Have previous experience supporting older people or working within a care setting; however, relevant training can be provided.
- Understand the importance of nutrition, hydration and individual dietary requirements.
- Have a genuine caring and compassionate approach.
- Be patient, respectful, reliable and trustworthy.
- Have good communication and teamwork skills.
- Be able to communicate clearly in English.
- Have basic IT skills for completing records and documentation.
- Be able to follow care plans, policies and health and safety procedures.
- Be flexible and willing to support both kitchen and care duties as required.
- A valid UK driving licence would be advantageous but is not essential.
