Job Summary
We are seeking skilled and empathetic tutors to create an exciting new branch of Next Steps Education in partnership with BCP Council. We're a BCP Framework Approved outreach tuition team, supporting students who feel overwhelmed by school environments. Our students range from 5 to16 years old and are often not in school due to mental health needs or while awaiting assessment for autism and/or ADHD.
Initially, you'll provide bespoke tuition in family, community and school settings. In time, we hope to replicate our successful North Devon model, creating a small, dedicated tuition space to support transition, reintegration and alternative pathways for young people who need something different from mainstream education.

What You'll Do
Every student who reaches Next Steps has their own story, strengths and challenges. More than just delivering lessons, you'll be part of a wider team helping vulnerable young people move forward with confidence and achieve their individual goals. You'll:
- Deliver one-on-one tutoring sessions in one or more subjects (usually English, Maths and Science) adapting teaching methods to meet individual student needs.
- Use our supporting student records to create personalised lesson plans that reflect each student’s needs, interests and targets.
- Support our wider team in understanding your students’ progress through formative assessments, session reports and review record updates.
- Create supportive and encouraging learning environments where students feel safe and valued
- Build strong, collaborative relationships with everyone involved: students, parents, fellow tutors, key professionals and the Next Steps team.
- Provide regular encouragement, feedback and guidance, helping students understand their progress and take pride in their achievements.
This is a self-employed role with flexible part-time hours, typically during school hours and term time only. You'll be supporting students across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, so a willingness to travel around the local area is important, whether that's by car, bike or Beryl scooter.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for educators who see the child, not just the curriculum: people who understand that progress may begin with trust, confidence and connection long before it appears in a workbook. As well as a passion for helping vulnerable, neurodivergent and emotionally-based school avoidant young people thrive, we'll need you to have:
- Proven experience in tutoring or teaching at any key stage, including QTS.
- An understanding of, or a commitment to developing expertise in, SEND, SEMH and neurodivergence.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple students' needs simultaneously.
- Patience, resilience and a creative approach to your subject(s).
- A genuine passion for inclusive education
Because of the nature of our work supporting very vulnerable students, Next Steps Education follows a very robust Safer Recruitment Policy, in line with best practice. We require an Enhanced DBS and Prohibition Check for this role and can facilitate an application at cost price.
