Purpose of the Role
The KS3 Mathematics Teacher will be responsible for delivering high-quality, autism-informed teaching to pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and associated needs.
The post holder will adapt the KS3 curriculum to meet the individual needs of pupils in a small-class specialist setting, ensuring learning is accessible, meaningful, and ambitious while supporting pupils’ communication, emotional regulation, independence, and wellbeing.
Significant experience of working with and supporting pupils with ASC is essential.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
- Plan, deliver, and assess high-quality, adapted lessons.
- Adapt the KS3 curriculum to meet the needs of pupils with ASC and associated needs
- Use autism-specific and evidence-based approaches, including:
- Visual supports and structured teaching
- Clear routines and predictable lesson structures
- Sensory and regulation strategies
- Communication-supportive approaches
- Create a calm, structured, and supportive learning environment
Ensure learning is:
- Accessible
- Engaging
- Relevant
- Appropriately challenging
- Use assessment effectively to:
- Track progress in both subject learning and EHCP outcomes
- Inform planning and differentiation
- Provide clear feedback to pupils and families
Pupil Development & Wellbeing
Support pupils’:

- Engagement in learning and school life
- Implement positive behaviour and regulation strategies in line with the school’s autism-informed approach

EHCPs, SEND & Outcomes
- Deliver provision aligned to pupils’ EHCP outcomes
Contribute to:
- Annual reviews
- Progress reports
- Target setting and multi-disciplinary planning
- Work closely with therapists and other professionals to support integrated and consistent provision
- Maintain accurate and high-quality records of progress and provision
Subject Leadership & Curriculum Development (proportionate to role)
- Contribute to the development of the subject curriculum across KS3 (and beyond where appropriate)
- Ensure the subject curriculum is:
- Ambitious
- Appropriately sequenced
- Well-adapted for pupils with ASC
Contribute to:
- Resource development
- Assessment approaches
- Moderation and quality assurance
- Promote enthusiasm and engagement in your subject across the school
Classroom & Team Working
- Work effectively with:
- Teaching Assistants

- Pastoral and support staff
- Provide clear guidance and direction to support staff in the classroom
- Contribute positively to the wider life of the school
- Engage fully in CPD, training, and reflective practice, particularly around autism and SEND

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Strong subject knowledge in Science
- Experience of teaching pupils in KS3
- Substantial experience supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ideally in a specialist or SEND setting
Strong understanding of:
- Autism and associated needs (e.g. sensory processing, anxiety, communication differences)
- Adaptive teaching and curriculum differentiation
- EHCPs and outcomes-based provision
Ability to:
- Make subject content accessible to pupils with a wide range of needs
- Create a calm, structured, and supportive learning environment
- Use positive, autism-informed behaviour and regulation strategies
- Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working in a specialist SEN or autism provision
- Experience adapting a subject curriculum for pupils working significantly below age-related expectations
- Additional SEND or autism-specific training
- Experience working with non-speaking or minimally speaking pupils
- Experience contributing to subject leadership or curriculum development
