What you need to know about the role
Here at British Steel, we require a Legal Counsel to join our Business Services Function and support the Legal Director.
You will support the Legal Director in providing legal advice across a full range of commercial legal issues and corporate support work. This will include the following activities:
- Negotiating and advising on a wide range of commercial transactions.
- Reviewing and/or preparing a wide range of contractual documentation, including sale and purchase agreements, IP licenses, confidentiality agreements and similar.
- Managing early-stage disputes and working with external counsel on litigation matters.
- Support to other functional departments (estates, human resources, finance, R&D) on legal issues affecting these areas.
- Managing external advisers where appropriate, ensuring service levels and value for money
- Advising on changes in relevant law and regulation and providing training to support business activities.
- Supporting compliance activity
Having an awareness of the Company’s policy framework and how it is implemented (in some cases, it will be the responsibility of the Legal Counsel to monitor and uphold that framework)

The role will be primarily located at the offices of our integrated steelworks in Scunthorpe but there may be some flexibility to work from our other locations or in a hybrid capacity.
What we need to know about you
This is an exciting opportunity for appropriately qualified professional (5 years+ PQE) who can practice law in England and Wales. You need to have sufficient experience in core areas of company and commercial law.
Previous in-house experience is an advantage but not essential. You will also ideally have experience in working across a variety of jurisdictions and practice areas.
Communication is critical to the success of this role and you need to be capable of operating at all levels of the organisation working with colleagues of all disciplines.
