** Background
The Payroll and Pensions Administrator is a pivotal role within the University’s Payroll and Pensions Team, forming part of the wider Finance Directorate. The function is responsible for the accurate, timely and compliant delivery of payroll and pensions services across the institution
Operating within a complex and highly regulated environment, the team provides specialist expertise to support the University’s obligations while upholding the highest standards of governance, accuracy, and customer service. The role contributes directly to maintaining the integrity of payroll operations and strengthening relationships with key institutional and external stakeholders
** Responsibilities
In this role, you will provide a hands-on payroll and pensions service, supporting all aspects of administration, payments, statutory returns, and reporting. You will ensure the accurate and timely processing of payroll inputs, including new starter information, P45s, student loans, and court orders. You will also manage leaver processes, ensuring P45s are issued prior to RTI submissions to HMRC.
You will support pension administration by completing leaver documentation and fulfilling auto-enrolment duties. In addition, you will assist in the preparation and submission of payroll journals and support the reconciliation of payroll control accounts within the general ledger.
A key part of the role will involve responding to payroll queries from staff via email, telephone, and in person, ensuring a professional and timely service. You will liaise effectively with colleagues across Finance, HR, Schools, and Departments on payroll and pension matters, escalating complex queries to your Line Manager when necessary.
You will contribute to delivering a high-quality customer service experience across the payroll function and work collaboratively with colleagues across Finance and HR to support a seamless employee experience. You will also provide support for ad hoc projects and administrative activities as required.
** Person Specification
You will be an organised and proactive individual with strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy. You will have experience in payroll and/or pensions administration, alongside strong numerical and data-handling skills. You will demonstrate excellent organisational abilities and the capacity to meet deadlines.
A customer-focused approach is essential, supported by strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
